Nice Lesson Plans
By meggio
I bought this book to use for teaching a small one hour a week Spanish class for students ages 6-9. All of the students in my class have a very limited knowledge of Spanish. It was my first time teaching Spanish to kids so I needed a place to start. The lesson plans in this book have been very helpful. While I don't follow it to a T, it definitely keeps me on track and provides enough ideas that I can then add to each lesson etc. Sample lesson plans from the book go something like this: Introduce new vocabulary, sing a vocabulary related song (lyrics provided in the book), create a learning book (make copies based on model provided in the book) or do a worksheet (also provided in the book), play several games related to the new vocabulary (ideas provided in the book), then review previously learned vocabulary or do an overview of new words to be introduced in the next lesson. There are several work sheet options to choose from for each lesson, so I usually just pick one to do each class based on which one I think will be both the most fun and most effective. I definitely don't do all the work sheets provided or my students would be bored to tears.

Great workbook, if only....
By tara.byte
I like the lesson plans in the book and the "song list" this is a good book to help teach Spanish for beginners. The mini booklets and flash cards are a great resource for my kids. I just wish this came with an audio CD. If you are not familiar with Spanish accents or feel comfortable singing you may have difficulty teaching with this book.

Great book for elementary
By Hot Tamale
I purchased this book because I was to teach preK-2 summer school Spanish. I normally teach Spanish, but for 8th and 9th graders. This meant I needed something with lots of pictures and songs. This book was just what I needed! It has lesson plans and reproducible worksheets. I also used some pages from Teach Them Spanish Grade PreK, but this book was the basis for my class, which will be finished tomorrow. This book really helped me figure out what I would teach them and how.

Godd information and easy to read!
By Dan Carte
I am taking a class in CSS at the local Junior College in Santa Rosa. I am also about to complete my BS in computer science so I have read quite a few "Computer books" by now. My two BIG criteria are
1-Does the book provide valuable information and useful tips?
2-Is it easy to read? Surprisingly some computer books are actually quite readable!

This book meets both criteria so far it earns all five stars. I have not ye4t finished the book SO my other big question is does it cover conditional styling? I'm sure it does but being the Kindle version I have not browsed for it.

My one complaint on the Kindle version is that the examples are too small and faint to be easily readable. In most cases i have to magnify them to read them.

Okay book...needs true tutorials
By SquirrelGirl
I was really hopeful that this would be a great book...I was drawn to the "Designer's Guide" title...I'm more of a graphic designer and not a programmer. I had bought three books on CSS, including this one.

I felt that this one wasn't as thorough as other ones I've read...and there was a lack of good, thorough tutorials. The files you can download include the HTML/CSS for every figure in the book, but I didn't feel that this really constituted a "tutorial." I learned a little from comparing the figures and code, but I have seen other books walk you through the concepts and provide step-by-step tutorials...this one doesn't. I currently own four books on CSS that are current.

I also noticed that there are situations where you can shorten your CSS code...and other books highlight this. I never saw mention of it in this book.

I'll take another look at the book to make sure this is a fair review, and may revise it. But I didn't learn as much from this book as I did from the others. I expected it to have much more "whiz-bang" design...it talks a bit about typography and such, but I think columns and layout could be covered better.

The information is there, it's just not presented in a start-to-finish tutorial format. The author talks about what they might add to the code, but is never really clear about whether the user is following along, or if you're just reading the information to see how someone else *might* do it.

The Public School Advantage: Why Public Schools Outperform Private Schools, by Christopher A. Lubienski, Sarah Theule Lubienski

Nearly the whole of America’s partisan politics centers on a single question: Can markets solve our social problems? And for years this question has played out ferociously in the debates about how we should educate our children. From the growth of vouchers and charter schools to the implementation of No Child Left Behind, policy makers have increasingly turned to market-based models to help improve our schools, believing that private institutions—because they are competitively driven—are better than public ones. WithThe Public School Advantage, Christopher A. and Sarah Theule Lubienski offer powerful evidence to undercut this belief, showing that public schools in fact outperform private ones.
For decades research showing that students at private schools perform better than students at public ones has been used to promote the benefits of the private sector in education, including vouchers and charter schools—but much of these data are now nearly half a century old. Drawing on two recent, large-scale, and nationally representative databases, the Lubienskis show that any benefit seen in private school performance now is more than explained by demographics. Private schools have higher scores not because they are better institutions but because their students largely come from more privileged backgrounds that offer greater educational support. After correcting for demographics, the Lubienskis go on to show that gains in student achievement at public schools are at least as great and often greater than those at private ones. Even more surprising, they show that the very mechanism that market-based reformers champion—autonomy—may be the crucial factor that prevents private schools from performing better. Alternatively, those practices that these reformers castigate, such as teacher certification and professional reforms of curriculum and instruction, turn out to have a significant effect on school improvement.
Despite our politics, we all agree on the fundamental fact: education deserves our utmost care. The Public School Advantageoffers exactly that. By examining schools within the diversity of populations in which they actually operate, it provides not ideologies but facts. And the facts say it clearly: education is better off when providedforthe publicbythe public.

Review
“A powerful blow against the central premise that students at charter and voucher schools get a better education than their public school counterparts.”
(David Kirp Slate)

“Public School Advantageis a book to be reckoned with. The calling card of today’s leading voices in educational reform is the charge that our public schools are failing. But failing in comparison to what, the Lubienskis ask? Traditional public schools are not failing to keep pace with charters and private schools, at least in teaching students math, one of the two subjects at the heart of No Child Left Behind and theCommon Core. On the contrary, traditional public schools in some cases appear to have advantages over other kinds of schools that are usually perceived as more innovative and rigorous. While more empirical work on the public school advantage needs to be completed—in subjects beyond math and grades beyond elementary school—the Lubienskis have launched a strong salvo in the contentious debate about school effectiveness.”
(Jeffrey Aaron Snyder Boston Review)

“The Public School Advantage is a complete and thorough analysis of America’s many different kinds of schools—secular, charter, and public—and should end the arguments about which kind is better. Chris and Sarah Lubienski provide both the data and the clear explanations needed to understand the many false claims made about the superiority of schools that are not public. The result is a ringing endorsement of public school achievement.” (David Berliner, author of Collateral Damage: How High-Stakes Testing Corrupts America’s Schools)

“In The Public School Advantage, Christopher and Sarah Lubienski present studies that challenge assumptions of the market-based argument for education and provide a cogent analytical comparison that evaluates public versus private elementary school performance. While questions remain, they provide an important contribution to a timely topic. This book provides empirically based insight about the school choice debate and is worthy of our attention.” (William F. Tate, past president of the American Educational Research Association)

“Their data-driven argument is a valuable contribution to a vitally important topic.” (Glenn Altschuler Oregonian)

“This important book provides clear evidence that the ‘free-market model’ of schooling does not match the hype of the privatization movement. It demonstrates that public education is a valuable and successful institution. It must be protected and strengthened, not privatized.” (Diane Ravitch, author of Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools)

“The author’s conclusions make a strong case for the continued investment in public schools and for resisting market-driven approaches.”
(School Administrator)

Lots of interesting data on different types of schools
By SamIAm
This book lays out two different studies with two different national datasets. In one study the authors look at students' math achievement in public, Catholic, Lutheran, Conservative Christian, "Other Private" (including non-religious privates) and Charter schools. In the second study they zero in on comparisons between Catholic and public schools. If you think it's bizarre that public schools outperform private schools when rich, smart people will PAY to put their kids in private, then read the book to find out why. The book makes interesting points -- e.g., that private and charter schools put money into advertising and do "innovative" things like require school uniforms instead of focusing on making instruction better. And it is important to keep in mind that the studies aren't just a simple comparison of raw scores, because obviously rich kids usually do better in school -- the kids walk in the door with every advantage so of course private school achievement looks good. But the authors make an apples-to-apples comparison of demographically similar students in different types of schools.

The book explains some of why public schools are doing better than you'd think -- E.g., in Private schools, kids are more likely to learn math in old fashioned ways, and private schools are free to hire anyone they want. Although school autonomy might sound like a good thing, the book raises interesting questions about this -- if schools are free to hired unqualified teachers and to stick with teaching methods from 30 years ago, is that a good thing? This is obviously politically loaded terrain (as you can see from the polarized reviews). And we can all point to really good private schools and really bad public schools. But those examples totally miss the point of the book, which is about national averages and making public policy based on faulty assumptions about private schools somehow being inherently better just because they're private. You might not like the book's conclusions, but it's worth a read to look at the interesting evidence for those conclusions.

Thorough analysis of the data across our nation's public, private and church affiliated schools.
By Avid Reader
This is a very tight research study of our nation's public, private, and church affiliated schools. For years it's been borne out that charter schools perform well the first year, then about the same as public schools. The public and private billions poured into charter schools as the "answer" to students poorly performing on achievement tests just doesn't pan out. However, many politicians are reaping the benefits as charter school founders pour money into their election coffers--something this book doesn't address but just pick up a newspaper.
This book is a must read for anyone who truly wants what's best for our nation's kids.

Recommend
By Martha Makowski
I found The Public School Advantage to be an accessible and informative treatment of recent data on the effects of public school education on mathematics performance, relative to other types of schools. It provides a detailed introduction to the topic, balancing an overview of the issues and debate with data about student performance on mathematics assessments at public and private schools. This balance meant I never felt bogged down in the details, but also got enough information to feel satisfied with the authors' conclusions and believe that as a result of reading this book that I can talk with some authority on the issues surround math education at public and private schools. I found the section in which the authors identified the instuctional factors that differ between public and private schools the most compelling part of their argument and would recommend that chapter, in particular, to anyone interested in public versus private education.

I think the structure of the book is worth noting: it starts with a discussion of the issues, followed by a detailed overview of the evidence, and then draws conclusions. The details of the methodology are left to the (almost 100 page) appendix. While this format might leave a critical reader hanging with questions for a while, the text is also more accessible as a result, and the questions do get answered.

The White Tiger: A Novel, by Aravind Adiga

A stunning literary debut critics have likened to Richard Wright’s Native Son, The White Tiger follows a darkly comic Bangalore driver through the poverty and corruption of modern India’s caste society. “This is the authentic voice of the Third World, like you've never heard it before” (John Burdett, Bangkok 8).

The white tiger of this novel is Balram Halwai, a poor Indian villager whose great ambition leads him to the zenith of Indian business culture, the world of the Bangalore entrepreneur. On the occasion of the president of China’s impending trip to Bangalore, Balram writes a letter to him describing his transformation and his experience as driver and servant to a wealthy Indian family, which he thinks exemplifies the contradictions and complications of Indian society.

Recalling The Death of Vishnu and Bangkok 8 in ambition, scope, The White Tiger is narrative genius with a mischief and personality all its own. Amoral, irreverent, deeply endearing, and utterly contemporary, this novel is an international publishing sensation—and a startling, provocative debut.

Starred Review. First-time author Adiga has created a memorable tale of one taxi driver's hellish experience in modern India. Told with close attention to detail, whether it be the vivid portrait of India he paints or the transformation of Balram Halwai into a bloodthirsty murderer, Adiga writes like a seasoned professional. John Lee delivers an absolutely stunning performance, reading with a realistic and unforced East Indian dialect. He brings the story to life, reading with passion and respect for Adiga's prose. Lee currently sits at the top of the professional narrator's ladder; an actor so gifted both in his delivery and expansive palette of vocal abilities that he makes it sound easy. From The New Yorker
In this darkly comic début novel set in India, Balram, a chauffeur, murders his employer, justifying his crime as the act of a "social entrepreneur." In a series of letters to the Premier of China, in anticipation of the leader’s upcoming visit to Balram’s homeland, the chauffeur recounts his transformation from an honest, hardworking boy growing up in "the Darkness"—those areas of rural India where education and electricity are equally scarce, and where villagers banter about local elections "like eunuchs discussing the Kama Sutra"—to a determined killer. He places the blame for his rage squarely on the avarice of the Indian élite, among whom bribes are commonplace, and who perpetuate a system in which many are sacrificed to the whims of a few. Adiga’s message isn’t subtle or novel, but Balram’s appealingly sardonic voice and acute observations of the social order are both winning and unsettling.

From Bookmarks Magazine
At the end of the novel, Balram predicts that "brown and yellow men [will be] at the top of the pyramid, and we'll rule the world." Certainly, The White Tiger is a parable of the "new India," a rapidly growing global powerhouse of middle-class call centers juxtaposed against crushing class conflict and corruption. In contrast with other Indian authors, Adiga does not sentimentalize such conflict; instead, like Richard Wright's Native Son, to which the novel was compared, he shows how savvy manipulators can rise above it. Most critics thought that Adiga brilliantly told this story with wit and pathos. A few, however, thought that he lectured in parts, caricatured extreme wealth and poverty, and missed an opportunity to say something meaningful about Balram's desperation instead of mocking upper-class life. Either way, Adiga is an author to watch.Copyright 2008 Bookmarks Publishing LLC

Memorable Narrator
By Ubookquitous
4.5
Adiga's debut novel gives us on narrator who is, by turns, charming, repugnant, profound, egotistical, insightful, and much more, but always, always fascinating. Balram, when he introduces himself, is a self-made entrepreneur and a murderer. His story is told through a letter he writes to the Chinese Premier who will be visiting his country. His voice is unique and can stand with some of the best know 'narrators' of classic literature. That his is such a different voice from a underrepresented culture from much of the canon literature is perhaps what makes it more real - in that his tale is authentic to who he is, and the world in which he exists, but that world is likely so unfamiliar to the audience that it confounds expectation and forces us to look at our own stance and belief on many moral, philosophical, and religious topics.

Anyone who knows me, knows I tend to be highly critical of 1st Person narration for a number of reasons. To create a unique, memorable voice that tells the story is complicated - perhaps more so than many authors understand, despite 1st POV being the instinctual way to tell a story. Besides the need for a unique voice, 1st POV can only tell one story always filtered through the narrator and too often authors try to short-cut or work around this and find ways to tell another story that we are to believe is not filtered through the consciousness telling that story. Here, however, that is never the case. We are left with no doubt that the world Balram inhabits is all his.

Balsam offers to give the Premier insight into his country through his own tale of being born in a lower caste in the 'darkness', through his sporadic and limited education to the moment he gets lucky and becomes a driver for a wealthy man. Through his bizarre, amusing, shocking, winding tale, we do see an India that is far different than the Bollywood films or many popular books and films. Balram's world is filled with corruption, yet there is a level of honor within that established system. There is a hardness and a harshness to many of the lives presented, yet there is an acceptance of them that is surprising. Balram's life is one of service, yet he finds a door to freedom, albeit one that while revealed early on, takes an entire book to build to. When we first hear him refer to himself as a murderer, we want to dislike him - yet it is difficult to do. Bit by bit we are drawn into his world and his worldview. In the end, he participates in the very system he needed to escape from, but he does so on his own terms and with his moral sense in tact, leaving him feeling he at least is living in that system in a better, more moral way. The ability to convince the audience of the same is perhaps the real power of Balram, and Adiga.

My one criticism of the novel is that were moments that felt repetitive, that we'd covered that ground well and needed to move on. Fortunately, they were few and far between, and overall I was absorbed into Balram's world.

For this book, I alternated between the kindle version and the audio - and I have to say that the narrator on the audio version was excellent, bringing life to a diverse cast of characters with slight shifts in tone, rhythm, pitch, and subtly that was masterful. Considering the story is 1st POV, that the audio narrator had to filter all the characters through the storyteller, it was extremely well done because it felt like Balram was imitating those around him, giving us yet another layer of story.

Entertaining and disturbing all at once
By Leslie N. Patino
“The White Tiger” is written as a letter from Balram Halwai to the Chinese prime minister in which Balram offers himself as an example of an Indian entrepreneur. He tells of his impoverished childhood in a small village, a few years of schooling before his family sends him to work in a tea shop and how he eventually gets a job as the chauffeur for one of the married sons of the local wealthy family that controls everything in the village from the economy to the lives of the residents. The Americanized son and his wife are tasked with moving to Delhi and greasing any palms necessary to keep the family interests going. Balram quietly goes about his job—until the day he murders his boss—a fact he readily admits early on in the novel. He then uses his ex-boss’s money to start what becomes a very successful business.

Aravind Adiga does an exceptional, and often funny, job of weaving many of India’s problems into his tale: large scale poverty, rampant corruption, class inequality, inadequate education. He creates a poor but smart, hard-working protagonist you want to like and root for, but who is also a smug, amoral murderer. Balram seems so pleasant that I kept reading to find out what drove this seemingly docile man to murder. The implications of Balram as a symbol of lower class Indians (polite and eager to please while seething underneath), are plenty uncomfortable. Adiga never gets preachy or long-winded. Much like Mohsin Hamid’s 2014 novel, “How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia,” “The White Tiger” entertains and disturbs all at once.

Emotionally Engaging Tale
By L. Farwell
This is the story of a man, Bairam who grows up in a poor, rural village in modern India where greedy landlords run the affairs of the village and government officials and politicians turn out to be either corrupt or incompetent. As a young man Bairam goes to work as a chauffeur for a wealthy family in Deli where he discovers how the rich live. In a moment of rage he kills his employer. He escapes to Bangalore where, while hiding from the police, he becomes a successful small businessman. In the telling his story, what Bairam is doing is describing the attitudes and experiences of millions of poor Indians. It is an emotionally engaging tale of challenge and survival with elements of dark humor, anger, revenge and, for many poor Indians, despair.

Highly Recommend for All Curious Readers and Beginners of Islamic Finance!

If you are interested to learn more about Islamic Finance (professionally or personally), I highly recommend that you get this book. It is a book that was thoughtfully written with the audience in mind - some history, industry insights are explored as well which gives the reader a better frame of reference.

I read this book alongside an online course in Islamic Finance - the online course provides solid technical knowledge of Islamic Finance (all the how-tos) and this book provides real-life applications, how Muslim countries developed and practiced Islamic Finance which helped me appreciate and cross-check everything that I had learn in the online course.

There were many moments where I had said, "Wow!" because I was so impressed by Islamic Finance - thank you to the author for bringing them to light in the most engaging way, that it made me feel proud for being Muslim, and hope to contribute to Islam through Islamic Finance, in sha Allah.

No other book on Islamic Finance comes close...NONE

I just recently completed my Post Graduate Diploma in Islamic Finance Banking and I did in fact purchase many books on it. Brian Kettell's books are a waste of time. This book was not only informative it answered MANY of the questions I had to answer on my exams. While there are many books on the minutiae of Islamic Finance and Sharia Law concerning Islamic Finance this book covers it all. For all practical purposes if you cannot afford an MBA or Post Graduate Certificate in Islamic Finance just simply by this book and SAVE thousands of Dollars. Enough said.

Adequate content, low price and prompt delivery.

I picked up snippets of reference to Islamic Financing and thought knowledge of the subject might help me better understand the stakeholder model of corporate governance. I listened to lectures on Islamic Banking and Financing from iTunes U, but because of the way I learn and the terminology specific to the subject matter, I needed a print supplement. I googled Islamic Financing for Dummies and found there actually was one so I bought it. It is fully adequate for my requirements at this time.

The book was new and inexpensive. I received it promptly. I couldn't ask for more.

The Changeling, by Kenzaburo Oe

Oe introduces Kogito Choko, a writer in his early sixties, as he rekindles a childhood friendship with his estranged brother-in-law, the renowned filmmaker Goro Hanawa. Goro sends Kogito a trunk of tapes he has recorded of reflections about their friendship, but as Kogito is listening one night, he hears something odd. "I'm going to head over to the Other Side now," Goro says, and then Kogito hears a loud thud. After a moment of silence, Goro's voice continues: "But don't worry, I'm not going to stop communicating with you." Moments later, Kogito's wife rushes in; Goro has jumped to his death. With that, Kogito begins a far-ranging search to understand what drove his brother-in-law to suicide. His quest takes him from the forests of southern Japan to the washed-out streets of Berlin, where Kogito confronts the ghosts from his own past and that of his lifelong, but departed, friend.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In 1997, Juzo Itami, one of Japan's most successful film directors, jumped to his death in Tokyo. Nobel laureate Oe (Hiroshima Notes) was Itami's brother-in-law, and he transposes Itami's suicide, under a fictional disguise, into a dazzling and elaborate maze of memories and meditations centering on the suicide of film director Goro Hanawa. Goro has made a series of tapes for Kogito, his world-famous writer brother-in-law, as groundwork for a possible film, which Kogito listens to obsessively after Goro's suicide. To rid himself of Goro's ghost, Kogito travels to Berlin, but even there he runs into pieces of Goro's past. Eventually, the reader is led back to the two men's youthful involvement with a right-wing paramilitary group founded by Kogito's late father. What begins as a weekend spent at the group's camp turns into something sinister from which Goro emerges fundamentally changed. Oe's deft mix of high intellectual reflection and absurd slapstick scenarios is polished to a high gloss, giving this book a tone that may remind American readers of Saul Bellow's Humboldt's Gift. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Japan’s greatest living novelist has brought the autobiographical novel and the roman clef to the highest artistic distinction by merging them. His and his family and friends’ thoughts and doings are nearly always the stuff of his novels. This book opens with Kogito, a distinguished novelist, listening to audiocassettes just sent him by his oldest friend, Goro, a filmmaker. After his pal says he’s going to head over to the Other Side now, there is a loud thud on the tape. Goro’s voice returns, saying he won’t stop communicating with Kogito. Then Kogito’s wife interrupts to tell him that Goro has committed suicide by jumping off a roof. (Oe and Juzo Itami, whose Tampopo was an international hit, were longtime friends, and the latter’s 1997 death was identical to Goro’s.) Communication does continue, first as Kogito vocally responds to the tapes, then in memory while the novelist undertakes a guest lectureship in Berlin, where he meets Goro’s chaste, last young lover. The ghostly colloquy gradually focuses on an incident the friends shared as late teenagers in the sticks where Kogito grew up. As in previous novels and with comparable mastery, Oe deeply ponders love, sex, art, friendship, family, and death in a rich, psychologically acute rhapsody of narration anchored in personal calamities. This one ends with a willfully upbeat line by Oe’s fellow Nobelian, Wole Soyinka. --Ray Olson

A Life in Fractals
By Roger Brunyate
Fractal designs, such as used to be popular twenty years ago, have the property that any part of them replicates the whole in miniature. If you zoom in on even the tiniest detail, you can reach an understanding of the entire shape. This analogy occurs to me after reading THE CHANGELING by Kenzaburo Oe, a late work by the Japanese Nobel Laureate, and so far the only thing by him that I have read. Where most novels have a linear narrative behind them, this one reads as a series of one-sided conversations, thoughts about literature and other arts, buried memories, and some bizarre incidents -- all generally minor in themselves, but each seemingly endowed with immense hidden significance, each a clue to some overall design that only gradually emerges as the various details replicate and mirror one another.

Despite its abstract content, the book is easy to read and its framework simple. Kogito Choko, a celebrated writer, is listening to some tapes sent him by his brother-in-law Goro Hanawa, once his childhood friend and now a famous film director. At the end of one of the cassettes, Goro remarks "So anyway, that's it for today -- I'm going to head over to the Other Side now. But don't worry, I'm not going to stop communicating with you." Immediately after, Goro throws himself out of the window of his high building. Kogito (an obsessive thinker, aptly named by his father from the phrase "cogito ergo sum") engages in months of conversation with the dead Goro, playing snatches of the tapes, stopping them for his own response, and then continuing to hear his friend's answer. When his wife suggests he needs to get away, he accepts a guest professorship in Berlin, where Goro had himself lived a few years back.

As an example of Oe's method, take the chapter in which Kogito is being interviewed on television in connection with the Berlin Film Festival. There is a long section about how he gets to the interview, or almost doesn't get to it: crossed wires with the person picking him up, confusion at the hotel where this is taking place, description of the technicians setting up the equipment in the hotel ballroom, the physical arrangement of the chairs, backdrop, camera, monitors, all in obsessive detail. And then, without further preamble, Kogito is shown a number of film clips on the monitor: samurai fighting off a peasant army, and a modern game of rugby football. He recognizes it as scenes from a book he had written, entitled RUGBY MATCH 1860. In the novel, he had used the battle and the game as metaphors, but he intrigued by the decision of these filmmakers to film them literally, with an acute feeling for the Japanese atmosphere. He is told that what he has just seen is the only footage from the project so far shot, but the young filmmakers have run out of money; would he be willing to concede them the rights for free? Kogito's translator warns him that he is being ambushed, but he agrees, and the chapter ends.

The core of this chapter, I believe, lies in one of its smallest details, the samurai film clip. Certain aspects of it reflect other images we encounter involving Kogito's father, who appears to have been something of a philosophical leader of an ultra-right-wing movement opposing the Japanese surrender to the US. Kogito's own politics, on the other hand, are liberal, so perhaps he is the Changeling of the title? (Or one of them, along with Goro.) One begins to see that the whole novel is about change. In the background, there is the reconstruction of Japanese society after defeat. But this is worked out in terms of ideas -- translation between languages, translation of one medium into another (writing into film or opera), and perhaps (as the example above would suggest) the handing over of ideas from one generation to another.

The fractal metaphor works on the personal level as well. From what I can gather, this novel reflects themes from every other book that Oe has written, and these in turn reflect the author's life. His brother-in-law was indeed a famous film director, Juzo Itami, who committed suicide in a similar way. Like the fictional Kogito, Kenzaburo Oe has a son who was born brain-damaged, barely able to communicate in words, but who eventually found success as a composer. All Oe's subsequent novels contain such a character, and the writer has spoken of his aim to give his son a voice denied to him in life. While the composer-son plays a relatively small role here, Oe shifts the relationship back a generation, as Kogito tries to understand the legacy of his own father and the huge changes between the Japan of his time and that of the present. The themes of rebirth and the passing of the torch between generations become clear only at the very end, but after so much mind-play they bring a lovely touch of simple human emotion.

All alone on the Other Side
By H. Schneider
The master is back in grand style. I had given up on Oe as a novelist, after the rather boring previous Somersault. His latest, originally from 2000, but in the translated version copyrighted 2010, is a magnificent hoax, a piece of double talk strewn with traps and resonant with the basso ostinato of relentless self-mockery. I am sure there are even readers who are fooled into thinking that this is a piece of darkness, loaded with the search for the meaning of death. Is there life after death, is there a soul different from the body? Where does it go?

The novel is based on real life events, mainly a brother-in-law's suicide in 1997, but essentially all the way back to WW2.
Oe gives us a self-portrait under the name of Kogito Choko. The hero is a writer of international fame, a brooding man, with a handicapped son (who has turned into a composer). Even Choko's book titles are identical with Oe's. Kogito has most of Oe's life, he comes from a place in the hinterland, surrounded by forests. He had studied French literature, and later, after having become famous, taken teaching assignments in the US and in Germany. He speaks English that is hard to follow. Germany is his second foreign market, after the US. His fame has somewhat subsided, and there are opponents, specially a journalist at home, who likes to attack him viciously. He has a childhood friend, Goro, who has made it in the film world, as an actor and as a director. Goro has made a film of Choko/Oe's `A Quiet Life'. Kogito has married Goro's sister.

The story starts with a bang: the friend/ brother-in-law commits suicide by jumping from a high place. He had previously taken up the habit of sending Kogito cassette tapes with long ranting monologues. Kogito will listen to the tapes at night, and make his own comments. It is a dialogue of sorts. The comments are not sent back. There are 30 tapes.

One day, while listening to a tape, Kogito hears an announcement from Goro that he is now going to the other side, and that he will stay in contact. Then follows a noise like a thud, which Kogito will later call the Terrible Thud. Then he hears Goro say some more words.
Later he learns that the suicide had happened some hours before. From then on, listening and re-listening to the collected tapes becomes an obsession, as does looking for other ways of contact with the friend, who is now assumed lonely on the Other Side.

We learn that Goro had messed with Kogito's life since a long time, setting up hoaxes, with him and also against him. Together they had cooked up the project that Kogito would invent an unknown, unpublished, aging Japanese writer, would publish conversations with him, would start inventing pieces of the man's work, would then let him die and then start editing the man's life work, thus merging into him.

We find that the tapes are full of similar pranks. Kogito is thus manipulated, from the `other side' so to say, into accepting a teaching job in Berlin in the winter 1999/2000. This excursion turns into an expedition into Goro's past, and possibly into the reasons for the suicide.
As the lives of the two men were intertwined for decades, the expedition also leads into Kogito's own past, and beyond that to his father's role as a leader of a short-lived right-wing insurrection which had tried to oppose Japan's surrender. Kogito has made enemies by his literary treatment of this past.
In a ponderous way we are gradually dragged into a literary mystery with a political dimension, where the awareness of time and of causality becomes shaky. The word cogitacious (or cogitational?) does not yet exist, but I propose to admit it to general use for books like this. Or do you believe Oe calls his `hero' `Kogito' for no reason?

The book's language is cogitacious not just in content, but also in style. That requires some getting into. As I don't read Japanese, I can't tell if it is equivalent to Oe's own style. It might well be that Oe builds walls to make it harder for us to enter his hermetic world, or to make us believe that he is serious.
It could also be the translator's fault. Since the text and the story move in the cultural rectangle of Japanese, English, French, and German, we meet quite a few international quotes and names. I am not always convinced that either Oe or his translator has handled all those quite properly. I have noted some cases, but won't bore you with them. They are trifles, but should be removed for a next edition.

A great novel, a true Nabokovian delight, just in time to revive my confidence in contemporary writers. Oe is not done yet. The book picks up on his old themes and works them into his new life story chapter. More should follow.

Unique masterpiece
By Jonathan A. Weiss
Kenzuboro Oe deserved the Nobel prize but is a very erratic writer with some defective works interspersed with major accomplishments. This book may be his best. It certainly is quirky so that it may not be to everyone's taste. The story which intertwines lives and changes narrative perspective (successfully) in the last section actually revolves around tape recordings by a person who committed suicide after a triumphs in the movies in a dialogue with a novelist who shares traits with the author. Quite a conceit. The pivotal event in the past deals with the novelist's father's last patriotic suicidal attack on a bank. The novel is richly textured, very vivid, carefully reflective, the characters extremely well portrayed. Sometimes the writing seems as if were meant to be translated as explanations of Japanese phrases follow. Immersion in this book will produce a profound understanding of post World War II Japanese reactions and the intellectual world that then developed. An adventure indeed and one worth taking for any lively mind.
