If mankind needs a catalyst to set off a classics-reading revolution that would cultivate a self-realized generation that is educated and empathetic enough to save us all, this could be it. Pathan offers new approaches and various methods based on her successful experiences with many students in classroom, home, tutorial, book club, library, book fair and other settings. She advises those trying to interest a resistant young person not to be discouraged but to use tact, endless imagination and a loving effort to sense which book would suit a certain child best before introducing it. The beautifully organized, presented, laid out and edited 98-page handbook, complete with bibliography, index and contact information, leads the readers to what they seek and is a handy reference. Quizzes and puzzles test your knowledge of well known classics and authors and are fun to to. Dr. Nikolaos Dimitriadis is a consultant and professor in management, leadership, neuromarketing and communications. He is Development Director of the Executive Development Center at the University of Sheffield's International Faculty, City College and he also teaches regularly on the Sheffield Executive MBA and other masters’ programs.

Dr. Alexandros Psychogios is a researcher and consultant in leadership and complexity, organizational behavior and change, and brain-based leadership. He is an Associate Professor on OB and HRM at Hull University Business School, a Research Visitor in South Eastern European Research Centre (SEERC), and an Associate Researcher in GNOSIS Research Group of the Management School at the University of Liverpool.

Very interesting book

Interesting book. My first impression was that there are no pictures or graphs in this book, and I believe that graphical explanations are very important. At the begining, text is little dull, but as you read further, everything becomes more interesting and clear. In fact, author showed that it is possible to explain serious concepts in plain words - no graphical representation actually isn't a problem for this book.
There are so many interesting concepts, and Neuroscience for leaders is pleasure for reading.
Highly recomended.

Mikolaos Dimitriadis and Alexandros Psychogios offer what they characterize as “a practical and holistic approach to understanding and implementing the leadership brain,” adding that they propose “the brain adaptive leadership (BAL) approach as a way of thinking, feeling, and acting within organized social entities. Brain adaptive leadership is an attitudinal approach that individuals can follow in their attempt to recalibrate their brains and mould their behaviour according to lead projects, processes and people.”

The BAL approach consists of three core elements: the brain, adaptation, and leadership. This approach has four pillars. “These are the four main groups of ideas, scientific insights and practical recommendations that we have gathered, organized and used as a comprehensive brain-based approach in our business, managerial, educational, and personal lives.” The first pillar reflects the cognitive function of the brain, the second reflects the emotional life of our brains, the third reflects the automated responses and protocols of our brains, and finally, the fourth and last pillar reflects the social aspect of our leadership lives.

I agree with Dimitriadis and Psychogios: "Today, modern leaders need all the help they can get, wherever this comes from.” Hence the timeless relevance and importance of Darwin’s observation. Each day, I realize that the world today has become more volatile, more uncertain, more complex, and more ambiguous than at any prior time that I can remember. Organizations have a greater need now than ever before to have effective leadership at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. Dimitriadis and Psychogios observe: “People, especially leaders, need to understand that they play a critical role in formulating the VUCA world around us. They are not passive actors. To do so, though, they need to develop new skills of adaptation.”

A slightly specialised, focussed read that sets out to show how we can be better leaders through the use of brain-based learning or neuroscience. Definitely a case of invest the time to reap the benefit with this book!

The authors take some of the latest thoughts and research within the field of neuroscience and apply them to a business leadership context, offering a clear framework to enhance how we think, how we process data, how we respond and how we develop our relationships - all designed with business in mind. This is supplemented by a host of case studies, exercises and self-assessment programmes.

It may be a challenging read but definitely a worthwhile one. It is written in a quite clear, easy-to-understand style when you consider the amount of theory and science it has to impart. The specific application and focus to a business context is the key here. This is a science and area that is not standing still; scientists are still learning about the human brain and its complex relationships, despite major advances being made in the past couple of decades.

The authors are quite clear, recommending that the reader does not just read this book but they immediately begin to try and apply the ideas and recommendations, starting in a form of experimentation with low-risk situations and broadening out this reach as the reader’s experience and confidence grows. It does make sense.

All in all, this is a recommended book for leaders and managers, particularly those who want to get an edge and be even closer, more in touch and direct with their fellow man. It has clearly the capability to deliver benefits to everyone too.

WARNING: SCAM AHEAD!

How this 'book' is receiving positive reviews staggers me-this book does nothing to help anyone start a NEMT Business-It is complete drivel. More than half of the book is state listings of offices that you can search in ten seconds on google. The rest is the most basic business info you can imagine (Type of business; Sole-Prop, Inc., etc.) The fact that they charge for this should be a violation of Amazon policy. I'm seriously thinking of publishing my own version of a NEMT book because I'm so upset that this type of garbage is available for such an outrageous price-they simply chose this outrageous price because of the lack of other titles offering help in this particular field. The others available, also simply try to rip off as many people as they can get away with-horrible.

I did like how detailed the book was about starting your own business. However, I felt it was lacking in the "how to portion", but overall it points you in the right direction to the resources that you need...I would recommend this book to others starting a NEMT business.

About the Author
Alice Miller, Ph.D., practiced and taught psychoanalysis for over twenty years before devoting herself to writing in 1979. She is the author of the bestselling "Prisoners of Childhood" (reissued in paperback as "The Drama of the Gifted Child") and "For Your Own Good: Hidden Cruelty in Child-Rearing and the Roots of Violence", as well as numerous other books. Miller lives in Zurich, Switzerland.

In 2005 Donald Miller started"The Mentoring Project, " an organization that helps churches start mentoring programs and pairs mentors with boys in need. Don's work with the fatherless led the Obama administration to invite him onto the president's task force on fatherlessness and mentoring. Donald is the director of "The Burnside Writers Collective", an online magazine. He is a frequent speaker, appearing at events such as the Women of Faith Conference, The Democratic National Convention, and Harvard University. He still lives in Portland, Oregon with his dog Lucy

Extraordinary Insight

In The Untouched Key, the great psychiatrist Alice Miller has written another penetrating work about the manifestation of subconscious experiences into the conscious world. As far as I am concerned, most of the more recent modern writers on the subject have little to add to works like this one. Here is a highly respected and successful therapist, who went out on a limb and confessed to her colleagues, at a time when she could have been basking in the glory of seniority, that she finally realized she only went into the field to learn how to heal her own pain; and then had the courage to withdraw her membership from psyciatric associations once she realized their hypocrisy (which she took full responsibility for in herself, as well).
In this very fine but brief work, Alice Miller studies pivotal works of art and compares their content with the life stories of their creators. The resulting analysis is impeccably true-to-life and highly plausible. She does not trivialize art in doing so, but makes a sound case for how artistic expression could be the great liberator of mankind, and brings us to even greater respect of the artists she discusses. Whether they knew it or not (probably not?) their unrestrained creativity is presented as a gift to teach and inspire us all, subconsciously or consciously, whether or not we choose to analyze it ourselves.

I think it is time that ALice Miller recieve the credit due her for her enormous efforts in uncovering coded childhood trauma. Her tireless work has had an transformative and empowering impact on my life and the way I view my childhood and children. In this book Alice uncovers what some people want to view as a "masterpieces" of "ART". "What is really going on here?"she asks. "Look deeper..what is this artist trying to communicate". At times Alice observes and brings to light that the artist is screaming. THis book is SO important!

Why I'm not so special (and what's so special about that)

A few years ago the therapist I had gone to see durnig a particularly harrowing period of my life recommended I buy a copy of Alice Miller's "The Drama of the Gifted Child" since she was certain that it would speak to the particular challenges I faced. "Wow," I thought, feeling flattered, "here's one intuitive lady. She can tell right off I'm a 'gifted' individual, one of the special ones." I headed to the nearest bookstore directly after the session and bought a copy and read half of it on the bus before I even got home.

No insult, no rejection, no critical barb that I'd ever experienced so quickly, nor so thoroughly deflated my ego--nor, as it turned out, so permanently.

I think I had some notion that the book was going to confirm my lifelong notion that I was some sort of exceptional creature of starlight that my dimwitted and immature parents, so ill-suited for parenting, had all but managed to snuff out with their psychological buffooneries. Oh, they had crushed me alright, or nearly so, twisted me, stifled me to the point where I am practically beyond normal human functioning, but the culture wasn't thereby losing any luminous polestar of immortal significance. Ha! I was just a normal, abused little girl. There was nothing special about me except my terrible and unrelenting need to be special. If you took any ten people, the only difference between me and the other nine was that I thought there was a difference. I had to be different; I had to be special in order to win my parent's love; in order to justify to myself their ill-treatment of me, I had to be the disguised prince, the Cinderella mistreated like a dirty scullery maid.

That was my drama: the drama of the "gifted" child.

Unlike me, and yet, at the same time, also like me, the artists, poets, philosophers, and dictators that Alice Miller treats in her book "The Untouched Key" did become world-renowned, did achieve a cultural immortality for their achievemens, whether for good or evil--and they were also all abused as children.

Ordinarily I wouldnt subscribe to this sort of psychological reductivism, the kind that traces an artist's or philosopher's ouvre backwards to the beatings he used to get as a six-year-old or his mother's pathological coldness or whatever. But Miller's argument is not only compelling it also acknowledges that the work of the adult artist is by no means invalidated because their worldview can be traced to their mistreatment as a child. The world can be understood just as Nietzsche understood it; indeed, the fact that Nietzsche's philosophy speaks to so many, seems so dead-on accurate, is because the world--full of grown-up abused children as it is--really does operate along lines of power and submission, of the strong and the weak.

Somewhat more controversial, however, is Miller's claim that the wellsprings of so much human creativity up to this point in history are almost exclusively to be found in childhood trauma. Art and history are, in a sense, a record of child abuse!

This seems a pretty preposterous proposition until you pause, take a good look at the world, and ask yourself if there is another more plausible explanation for the universal trainwreck that is humanity's lot, and always has been humanity's lot...and will continue being our lot for whatever future we still have as a species. What, after all, Miller argues, is the single most important common experience every human being everywhere shares? A childhood is her answer. We come out of the womb naked and innocent, knowing neither hatred nor cruelty...so how could things possibly have gotten to the point they have? Where do things go off the rails? To Miller it seems obvious. It's the way we're raised...by and large by parents who were also traumatized as children, and so it goes, and will continue going.

Among others, Miller turns her attention to Picasso, Stalin, Celan, Soutine, but it's Nietzsche to whom she devotes most of her book--and a good deal of the space she devotes to him is taken up with extensive excerpts from his work meant to illustrate the effect his awful childhood had on him--an effect, she asserts, eventually drove him insane.

Miller does not deny that a Picasso or a Nietzsche were indeed special; she doesn't deny that special people do exist, or that they don't possess aptitudes beyond the ordinary; they do. But she wonders what they might have been able to produce if they had been able to use their magnificent talents unencumbered by their unhappy pasts, if they hadn't been reflecting back to the world the story of their personal abuse which is also, in microcosm, the history of humanity's abuse towards its children, an abuse so many of endured at the hands of those who had the most influence in forming our view of the world and how to survive in it.

I have quite a few books on surface design, dyeing and so on, but found this book well worth buying, unlike the previous reviewer. After all, how many NEW techniques are there? The photos are sumptuous and eyecatching, techniques are well-summarised, and there were ideas in there that I haven't tried before. A good buy as far as I'm concerned.

When Phil Collins was a kid growing up in a London suburb, he would often watch an amazing show on his family television.  There, in black and white, was Fess Parker as Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier.  As he matured, Collins not only acted out the exploits of his new hero, but he often refought the Battle of the Alamo with his toy soldiers.  Even though music came to dominate his life, it was this love of history--and Davy Crockett and the Alamo in particular--that was always near by. On one musical tour, Collins encountered his first David Crockett autograph--for sale at a store called the Gallery of History.  "I didn't know this stuff was out there, that you could own it," the rock-n-roll legend said.  "It had never occurred to him. Later, he received a birthday-present that would change his life:  a receipt for a saddle signed by an Alamo defender.  From that point forward, the drummer began building his impressive Alamo and Texas Revolution collection. Here, for the first time in history, are the artifacts, relics, and documents that compose the Phil Collins collection, available in a beautifully designed color book shot-through with stunning photography and crisply rendered illustrations. Collins’s prose takes the reader through the joys of being a collector as he lovingly describes what each piece in this impressive assemblage means to him. Photographer Ben Powell of Austin brought these items to vivid relief, and artist Gary Zaboly’s masterful pen-and-ink drawings breath life into the items. Essays by Texas historians Bruce Winders, Don Frazier, and Stephen Hardin provide the historical background to the collection and help make this into a work of art that also serves handily as a serious research tool.

About the Author

 

PHIL COLLINS, drummer, actor, singer, producer, and now author, has been constantly active in all manner of contradictory and unlikely projects. His history with Genesis is well documented from their art-house beginnings to multiplatinum status as the band grew up. Collins launched his solo career twenty-nine years ago, picking up numerous awards that include eight Grammys, three Oscar® nominations, and two Golden Globes. 

Collins has written songs for Disney's Tarzan and Brother Bear. "You'll Be in My Heart" from Tarzan won a Golden Globe Award for "Best Song Written for a Film." This song, in addition to the soundtrack, was also nominated for Grammys and won for "Best Original Song in a Movie." Collins also won an Oscar for the same song in March 2000.

               An avid student of the battle of the Alamo since his boyhood, Collins has now turned his gifted pen to writing history. His first book, The Alamo and Beyond: A Collector's Journey, takes this passion and tells the story of the Texas Revolution through artifacts and documents from his private collection.

Nice photo and authentic Texas History book.

My Dad saw this book at a fundraiser and thought it was such a neat memorabilia piece on Texas history. He talked about how he should have bid on it. Thanks to Amazon, he had a copy 2 days later.

A wonderful story of Phil Collins and his lifetime love for the Alamo. Great photography of the rare pieces in Collins' collection, many found by him. A must-have coffee table book for Alamo enthusiasts.
