Preface

There is little doubt that, over the past four years, the profession of Financial Risk Management has grown considerably. Banks have set up specialist risk divisions whose function is not only to measure risk, but also to control it. Value at Risk has an important role to play here. Those who have a sound grasp of its principles, and who understand the unique nature of derivative risk, are in a better position not only to trade properly, but also to avoid contributing to the huge losses that many major banks have suffered in the last few years. Value at Risk is not only of interest to risk practitioners, but also to traders who want to trade profitably and, of course, to graduate and post-graduate students who want to become derivative traders, or who want to specialize in risk management. Recently, the Futures and Options Association has recommended that directors of major banks become actively involved in policies of risk management, rather than to delegate them, which is the current practice of many banks. A good grasp of VaR is, therefore, essential for this sector as well.

Mastering VaR is designed for the practitioner. Today, most practitioners recognize the importance of an interactive book, which encourages active as opposed to passive learning. Mastering VaR uses Excel spreadsheets to achieve this. If you have Excel available, you will be guided toward setting up a simple but illustrative VaR system. If you do not have Excel, the examples are designed so that you can follow them with relative ease and so at least understand how VaR systems operate.

A common complaint among practitioners is that, although there are many books on VaR, few are accessible to the non-academic. As one colleague put it, "It seems as though all writers in risk management are academic professors trying to impress more senior academic professors." In a practical world, many of the articles and books on VaR will lose the attention span of busy traders and practitioners who do not have a post-graduate degree in mathematics or statistics. Clearly, there is a gap in the market for a book which sets out, in digestible blocks, what VaR is, its limitations, and how to apply it.

The book is designed to give readers a practical insight into VaR and what this latest risk-measurement system is trying to achieve. In the first chapter, the concept of VaR is explained. You will be introduced to the concepts of volatility, normal distribution, and correlation. There are a number of practical but simple examples of each of these concepts. By the end of the chapter, you will have an intuitive understanding of the basics of VaR.

In Chapter 2, we examine why regulators and banks have found it necessary to develop a VaR system. We give you the regulators' perspective and the need for banks to "self-assess" their own risk with a view to calculating capital adequacy. We examine the role of the capital adequacy and why the existing framework is not the most suitable for measuring risk. The chapter also gives some insight into the Basle Committee and the evolution of self-assessment in terms of risk measurement.

In Chapter 3 we get down to the practical issues of risk measurement and build your knowledge of volatility and correlation (already introduced in Chapter 1). The idea behind this is to show you various approaches to the measurement of VaR and to illustrate the computational challenges of dealing with large portfolios. This chapter is to a large extent an interactive chapter where you can (if you have spreadsheets) build up a VaR measuring system which almost incorporates the broad features inherent in real VaR packages. Those who do not have spreadsheets will nevertheless to be able to follow the examples without any difficulty. Although the chapter appears very mathematical, we assume only a basic knowledge and direct nonmathematical readers to two small appendices which explain in simple terms how matrices operate.

In Chapters 4 and 5 we illustrate how fixed income products are "decomposed" and mapped onto weighting matrices for the purpose of risk measurement. Swaps, swaptions, and forward rate agreements are discussed in detail, in order to illustrate the complexities and how we can exploit natural hedging. We also compare VaR risk measurement with the more traditional forms of risk measurement, such as duration and convexity.

Chapters 6, 7, and 8 concentrate on risk measurement for options. In Chapter 6 we illustrate the unique risk nature of options and emphasize the "Greeks". In Chapter 7 we outline some of the popular strategies in which option traders engage and their risk implications. Chapter 8 then illustrates the weaknesses with the standard variance covariance approach and introduces a new method of risk measurement: Monte Carlo simulation. The principles of VaR are not just confined to market risk. In Chapter 9, we show how we can apply VaR principles to the estimation of credit risk. In particular, we look at CreditMetrics and the growth in the use of credit derivatives.

In Chapter 10, we concentrate on volatility forecasting and estimation. We illustrate the unique nature of volatility and the various models used by practitioners In particular, we talk about GARCH and compare this method to the exponentially weighted moving average method, as adopted by RiskMetrics. Finally, in Chapter 11, we look at the particular problems with modeling risk in general and in, particular, the pitfall of overreliance on models to measure risk.

Easy comprehension

This is what we often call "A cook book". It teaches us how to implement the risk valuation step by step.And it does provide a comprehensive way for us.But I still think the writer exclude the operaton risk and liquidity risk is a little....Since this is a dynamic world and there is a great possibility for us to face the extreme situation very often compared with the used-to- be.The LTCM is one of the case for the liquidity risk.So people have to think how should we cope with such a situation. Especially for the people who live the east Asia,we export the financial contraction,so the liquidity risk is one of the serious problem we would often face....So....This is still a great book....but perhaps the content is too little for us...

A practical book on VaR

Mastering Value at Risk is 80% practical and 20% theoretical. However, there are a lot of mistakes, specially printing and calculation mistakes. For example, page 24, 25, etc. ambiguous exercises. I require professional solved cases and applications of the real world. Back testing and stress testing themes present a poor development.
There is a great practical case on EWMA, but it can not be compared to GARCH model, because there is not a practical case on GARCH. There is no useful application. This model is only mentioned and explained theoretically. On the other hand Montecarlo Simulation presents a certain confusion. It's unclear and imprecise.

Finally, at the end of the book an address and e-mail are written in order to make contact with the author, but such an e-mail doesn't exist. It was impossible for me to contact Cormac Butler by means of that e-mail. Besides, there is a website in order to send your questions and queries named answerback.org. It was not possible for me to access this website.
Well, the book is good for a reader used to calculate VaR, not for beginners, because of printing errors and calculation mistakes. You must to identify them before to continue the next lesson and theme. Well, my rating to this book is 3 stars.

Until something better comes along. . .

The other reviewers are correct about the errors. The results of Mr. Butler's formulas sometimes don't match the formulas themselves which in turn don't match his results in the spreadsheets. Also, the grammar, particularly the punctuation, leaves much to be desired. This book had either a poor editor or no editor.

However, Mr. Butler is the only author to write a book that shows actual real-world VaR calculations. The other books give plenty of theory, but never enough detail to enable you to do your own VaR calculations. So until something similar and better comes along, this book will have to do. And really, the errors in the spreadsheets are not that hard to spot if you just follow the text and if you are aware that the errors are there.

Beware which version you order!!

I really enjoyed this story, a typical Jack Reacher tale with lots of excitement, action and a mystery to be unraveled. Unfortunately for me, I ended up having to purchase this story twice. Why would that be necessary you might ask? Glad you asked! My paperback version (2014 Dell Mass Market Edition, April 2014 edition) arrived brand new and everything was fine as I really got into the story, quite a page turner. Then I finished chapter 56 on page 416. The very next page in this book was page 129 (again) and the pages continued through page 176. The next page after that was page 465. (see the photos I've attached to my review) The pages continued as normal after that, however this paperback version of the book is quite worthless as a story with dozens of pages missing from it. So in order to continue where I left off I ended up ordering the kindle version for my tablet to get the whole story. This is why I dinged my review a star. Obviously, the problem is not with the retailer, nor the distributor but with the publisher for putting out such an incomplete book. Hopefully mine was just a fluke and others printed as they are supposed to be. But be warned and check the pages just in case! To their credit, Amazon was very quick with a refund for this defective book.

Not his best by far

I loved all the other books in the Jack Reacher series, but this one didn't even feel like it was written by the same author. Reacher is supposed to be extremely smart. He is constantly thinking about his situation and examining every angle. But the coin flip fifty-fifty device that he uses throughout the book seemed to dumb down this thought process. Every time he used it to tell someone about choices it was as if he was saying "It might happen and it might not". This did not seem to fit with the essence of Reacher. Also, I felt the storyline of the girl to be unbelievable. Again, I have read all the other books in the series and really enjoyed them, which in the end amplified my disappointment in this book.

Where is Jack Reacher? Who is this imposter?

I am a huge Lee Child / Jack Reacher fan, and have been reading these books for years, but it has got to the point where I say that this could very well be my last Jack Reacher purchase. It pains me to say this, as these books have been the highlight of my reading calender for so long, but the decline has become more noticeable with this book.

There were a few times when I seriously considered not finishing the book, but this is Lee Child and Reacher, surely it can only get better? No, the writing was consistent throughout, it was boring and repetitive. The plot was weak, and every solution to a problem on both sides was just too convenient, unbelievably so on many occasions.

Jack Reacher, in my opinion, has become arrogant - he is no longer the Jack Reacher I have enjoyed reading about all these years. This new Jack does things because he can - not because he must in order to survive. The ridiculous fire episode and the aeroplane scene clinched the deal for me.

The ending, and the reason for all the trouble Jack found himself in, was crazy, far-fetched and not what we have come to expect from Lee Child either.

I have been holding back on this review for days, but when you take the price of this book and what is between the covers, I think it is important that potential readers know that this is not up to Lee Child's earlier standards.

I am definitely the minority when it comes to reviewing this book - the 5 star reviews are rolling in on both Amazon and Goodreads. Maybe you will still enjoy this book if you are a die-hard Reacher fan, if not, I would give it a skip and rather try Lee Childs earlier Jack Reacher novels - they were brilliant.

Would I recommend this book? No
Will I buy the next book? Not on pre-order, I will wait for the reviews to come in first before buying - if at all.

Lyn Packer, along with her husband Rob, lead the Extreme Prophetic team in New Zealand and are also itinerant ministers worldwide. Lyn is an accredited Pastor and has pastored alongside her husband in New Zealand in a variety of situations for over 30 years. They are both widely respected as prophetic ministers within New Zealand and internationally.
Lyn carries a catalytic, revelatory anointing that brings breakthroughs and shifts to individual lives and Churches as she ministers. Her teaching and ministry carries a very strong prophetic edge, calling and enabling people to step into their destiny as the glorious sons and daughters of God. Dont just read about the experiences of others

Lyn Packer shows you how to enter into deeper relationship with the Lord. Read this book first, and then decide if you want to just be "religious", or if you want to be a cloud walker like Enoch. If you practice what this book teaches, you will be ruined for the Kingdom of God. Nothing else will ever satisfy you again.......it's a good thing.

This was the Best that I have read in a long time concerning the prophetic! Lyn Packet made a great contribution on matters that are seldom shared in extensive, clear and accurate scriptural and life experiences. I found much of what she shared exactly what I had been experiencing but she takes it further by sharing the meanings. What can I say I could not put the book down and was able to engage myself in the biblical truths and experiences. The book may not be very long but enough is packed in this book that I can testify that her heart was truly poured into this book. Questions that I had for years were answered and loved the five senses approach she cleverly made simple and to the point. A lot of meat. For me I would have given it a 7stars for completion because it ministered to be and the sincerity couldn't have come more clearly to me. I hope she is able to write more on the senses plus one in more detail. I think this book can benefit those who see in the Spirit and great guide to help clarify things where many just don't understand how hard it is to walk in the prophetic..as it can be lonely sometimes and challenging. God is so good!

The author of the famous 'Flashman Papers' and the 'Private McAuslan' stories, George MacDonald Fraser has worked on newspapers in Britain and Canada. In addition to his novels he has also written numeous films, most notably 'The Three Musketeers', 'The Four Musketeers', and the James Bond film, 'Octopussy'. George Macdonald Fraser died in January 2008 at the age of 82.

Reactionary romp through revolutionary Europe

Just finished reading this. It's been over a year since Our Man read the first Flashman novel, so forgive him if he fails to compare the two accurately. Perhaps the first was more enjoyable simply because Flashman as a character was a wondrous discovery; this time round he was more of a known entity.

But whatever, this is a great reactionary romp through revolutionary 1848 Europe, and Flashman has his way with the Queen of Bavaria and bests Bismarck at his Realpolitikin' to boot.

Great politically-incorrect fun and a parody of The Prisoner of Zenda too. Just love the character and the liberties Fraser takes with history and his refusal to take himself, the character or the genre too seriously.

So glad he wrote a dozen more.

The Flashman Series of historical action novels are a real treat to read if you are a European history buff. Flash man is the James Bond of the 19th Century. I have enjoyed all the Flash books I have read so far, and I think you will, too.

Harry Flashman meets Bismarck and Lola Montez

Harry Flashman is just the kind of rogue you can enjoy. An avowed coward, he nonetheless finds ways to extricate himself from danger. This book is set against the backdrop of the 1840's revolutions in Europe and features two very memorable characters: Otto von Bismarck and Lola Montez. It is a fun read and I highly recommend this book!

As the original author of INCOME TAX FUNDAMENTALS, Gene was critical in designing the forms-based approach that the book has used successfully for more than two decades. It is simply not possible to quantify the degree of our loss. Gene started his life in small-town Texas; entered the Navy; served his country in Vietnam, earned Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. degrees; and served as a distinguished faculty member at San Diego State University for almost 40 years. The outpouring of sorrow and gratitude from countless former students and colleagues are a wonderful tribute to Gene's love and devotion to teaching. We intend to continue to honor Gene by upholding his standard of publishing excellence for many years to come.

Steven Gill is an associate professor in the School of Accountancy. He received a BS in accounting from the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) an MS in taxation from Northeastern University (Boston, MA), and a Ph.D. in accounting (University of Massachusetts 2008). Prior to entering academia, Dr. Gill worked twelve years in the field of accounting, including roles in public accounting, internal audit, corporate accounting, and, ultimately, vice president of finance. Dr. Gill's research interests include a concentration in taxation, including mutual funds and college savings ("529") plans and wider interests tax compliance. He has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and his teaching interests include taxation and both financial and managerial accounting. In addition to co-authoring FEDERAL TAX RESEARCH, Dr. Gill is the author of INCOME TAX FUNDAMENTALS and an Editor on the 2018 SOUTH-WESTERN FEDERAL TAXATION series.

Martha Altus-Buller is a CPA with more than 25 years of tax accounting experience. She attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon for two years, holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California at San Diego and a M.S. in Accounting from San Diego State University. Ms. Altus Buller was awarded the Sells award for scoring among the top in the country on the May 1983 CPA exam. Her practical experience includes work as a tax manager for Arthur Young, now Ernst & Young, one of the Big 8 accounting firms at the time.

The author is able to boil-up the technical details into very concise ideas, and express them clearly. There are plenty of diagrams and tables that help to illustrate the concepts.

Having already been knowledgeable about UMTS, I thought the book hit each important area with clarity: system architecture, protocol stack, air interface, signaling procedures, and services. While it does help to already be familiar with cellular communications, this book is an excellent place to start if you are new to UMTS. It's also a great high level overview for managers.

Fabulous UMTS 3G overview book

This book is fabulous! It gives unbeatable overview of the UMTS 3G system. It enabled me, a data communication guy, can capture the design idea of UMTS and prevent me from getting lost in the sea of telecommunication acronyms. More than that, this book explain the physical layer (CDMA) in a easy way that even me, who is always doing L2-L7, can understand.

I really just wanted to learn transliterated Yiddish. But this book only uses transliteration through the first third of its chapters. I was really intimidated by having to learn a whole new alphabet to learn to recognize words on my favorite Yiddish and Klezmer Cds. But after a week of regular reading in the book, Im reading Yiddish right to left in the Hebraic Alphabet. The cd's are helpful and have multiple people speaking on them so it helps get a sense of different accents, but i certainly dont use them as much as the book. I spend a little time on the BART almost everyday reading some of the book and I already feel so klug.

New, modern, thorough...an awesome book!!!

I got Weinreich's "College Yiddish" about 4 years ago and I'm still working away at trying to finish it...not that it's hard or bad, but it's a little...dry. The exercises can get tedious. Two-thirds of the way through Weinreich's book, I discovered "Colloquial Yiddish" by Lily Kahn and I have nothing but fantastic things to say about it. It's terrific to finally have a truly modern resource that treats Yiddish as a language that is still present today.

First off, I love the book's physical appearance. It's such a lightweight little thing with nice paper, and the font is really easy on the eyes. The overall reading experience feels light and pleasant, so it never feels like you're working hard to digest tricky grammatical concepts.

Speaking of grammatical concepts, I think it's wonderful how Kahn does not assume any previous knowledge of grammar terms (e.g. "nominative," "dative," etc.) but she does teach them throughout the book, so you come out knowing all the standard terms used in the more advanced literature on the Yiddish language.

The dialogues are so much fun! Each chapter has two or three dialogues centered around three characters: Khane (a new student in the Yiddish course), Rokhl (studying for a Ph.D in Yiddish literature), and Dovid (also wants to get a Ph.D in Yiddish.) I liked Rokhl best, and not just because we have the same name... I think it's awesome how even in the very first chapter when the dialogues are still quite basic, their distinct personalities are already obvious. The discussions are lively and almost always end with a humorous note. And you really do have to read the WHOLE book, because you will not want to miss the surprise ending of how their story unfolds! I really like that the dialogue topics are relevant to the modern world. For example, there's one where Dovid goes into a Hasidic store to buy a CD and discusses modern popular music with the shopkeeper. There's also a dialogue where the characters discuss security on the internet and social media sites. See? Up-to-date material!

The bibliography at the end of the book has a treasure trove of suggested resources, many of them online, for a variety of Yiddish-learning tools. I looked them all up and am thrilled with being able to listen to Yiddish radio, read Yiddish newspapers and online archived books... the resource list is absolutely fantastic and I thought it deserved mention in this review.

I actually read the book the first time through without having the accompanying audio, and then I discovered that the MP3's are available on the publisher's website, so I bought them and went through the whole book again for comparison. I guess I found the audio helpful for pronunciation purposes, but other than that, I think the book is capable of standing alone if you already have an idea of correct pronunciation. The CDs advertise "bonus" audio exercises that aren't in the book, and this is true, but there is only about one per chapter. I did, however, retain the vocabulary words faster when I listened, so if you have a more aural learning style, you'll probably find the CDs helpful too.

I want to comment on the scope of the book, both in terms of grammar and vocabulary. I'm really impressed with how much vocabulary is taught in those 15 chapters. I finished this book and tried reading some articles in the Yiddish Forward (a popular Yiddish newspaper), only to find that I knew at least two-thirds, maybe more, of the words just from "Colloquial Yiddish." Kahn chose vocabulary that is relevant and thorough, and doesn't shy away from teaching lots of Loshn-Koydesh (Hebrew origin) words. The grammar, too, is very complete. While reading this book, I saw that Routledge had come out with an elementary grammar workbook by Rebecca Margolis, and I borrowed it from the library. Believe it or not, I found that it was actually too easy and there was nothing in it that was new to me because the grammar coverage in "Colloquial Yiddish" already covered it all.

Yes, this review is getting long, but there's one more thing that deserved mention: the reading passages at the end of each chapter. They may seem frustrating if you're lazy (like me) because they are meant to be dictionary practice: they are sprinkled with words you don't know yet, so you get to look those up in the glossary in the back. At first, this seemed like a chore to me, but it really does make sense as a learning strategy. After all, any Yiddish text you pick up in the "real world" is not going to have a convenient little vocab list under each paragraph, so it's good to develop dictionary skills. And the reading passages are on all kinds of topics, so it's great for passive vocabulary building and recognition.

If you don't have time to read all the rambling above, let me summarize my thoughts: This books is a MUST-READ for anyone interested in Yiddish!
