Brief but enjoyable primer

This is a brief but good introduction to operators, eigenvalues, and linear vector spaces. The discussion starts out with motivating the study of eigenvalues, which emerged from problems such as that of a vibrating string, and other problems with boundary conditions. The book then goes on to consider orthogonal functions and expansions, Sturm-Liouville theory and linear operators, and the last chapter is on vector spaces. Plus there are two appendices, one on Bessel cylindrical functions and the other on Legendre functions and spherical harmonics.

The vector chapter is over 40 pages and about half of the book, the other chapters being relatively brief, but enough to get your feet wet. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Sturm-Liouville theory, which I didn't know much about before, but had heard about for many years. For a little primer it was fine for that purpose and was money well spent, considering that the book was only eight bucks (with a one dollar discount for paperbacks at B & N).

I'm a big fan of the Dover paperbacks which often reprint quality classics at a fraction of what you'd pay for a modern text, and which are often better. Some advanced books in math and engineering these days can be $80 to $120, so Dover paperbacks at ten to fifteen dollars are a bargain. I have many of the Dover books in math and the sciences and consider them the foundation of that part of my library, even if I own other more expensive, more recent volumes.

Nice and concise

Great book for obtaining/reviewing the math skills needed for quantum mechanics. I love the message: the mathematics needed for quantum mechanics is relevant for many areas of classical physics. In fact, the math was mostly developed in the context of classical physics, enabling quantum mechanics to develop at a remarkable pace once the concepts were discovered. For $10, it's a great deal for anyone learning quantum mechanics.

About the Author
Ilya Rabinovich (1891-1942) was an early Soviet master from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). A five-time city champion, he tied for first place in the 1934/35 USSR Championship and was the first Soviet player to compete outside the Soviet Union, placing seventh at Baden-Baden, 1925.

There are better Python books for Kids

To be completely transparent, Packt Publishing sent me a review copy of this book.

First off, I didn't actually read every single word in this book. I call this the skimming review method. Personally I prefer to read a book at my own pace and review it accordingly, however I have been asked repeatedly by Packt to finish this review so this is what you get. My first impression was that this book would teach youngsters how to program in Python by creating mini-games. However we don't really get into games until chapter 5. We don't learn anything about pygame until chapter 8. Let's go over each chapter and see what they're about before I really dig in though

Chapter one is your basic intro to what Python is and how to install it. The author chose to use Python 2.7 for this book over Python 3. The rest of the chapter is about creating a "Hello World" application and a work folder.

Chapter two is about variables and functions. This chapter is pretty brief, but I thought it covered the topics well enough. The biggest thing it does is explaining to the reader how to create a function and save it to a file.

For chapter three, we actually get to create a calculator of sorts. It's text-based only and doesn't really do anything to handle bad inputs from the user. In fact, one big knock against this book is that it doesn't talk about exception handling at all. I also have a couple of problems with this chapter. I believe that page 34 is showing the wrong screenshot as the accompanying text is talking about casting from one type to another while the screenshot doesn't show any kind of casting whatsoever. The other issue is that on page 41, the text states that you can run the script as written in the book. However I don't see anything in the code that actually calls any of the functions, so if you run this code, you will get nothing outputted to the terminal.

Chapter four is all about conditional statements and loops. The purpose of this chapter is to enhance the calculator application you wrote in the previous chapter such that it keeps running until the user asks it to quit.

In chapter five, we learn how to create easy and hard levels for our game. The game is the "Higher or Lower" game. You will learn about what a Boolean is, how to import a library, and global variables.

Chapter six dives into some of Python's more interesting data types, the list and dictionary. The premise of this chapter is to teach the reader how to store data. While I agree that lists and dictionaries are a good format, I wonder if learning about pickle, json or yaml might have been good to learn about here too. Admittedly, I don't think this book talks about File I/O, so those topics are probably considered to be out of scope.

For chapter seven, the reader learns how to create a two player game that the author dubs "What's in Your Backpack?" This chapter helps the reader layout a game that can keep score, restart the game or stop the game. You will also learn how to create a player profile, which is formatted as a dict. This seems like a good place to use a class to me, especially if we're going to be using pygame in the next chapter, but I realize the target audience is supposed to be kids. Anyway, you will also get to add items to a virtual backpack, which is kind of fun to learn the author's implementation.

We finally reach pygame in chapter eight where you learn how to install pygame. You will also learn how to set up the screen size and color as well as create stationary and moving objects.

Chapter nine builds on chapter eight by teaching the reader how to create a tennis game (i.e. pong). It introduces the reader to the concepts of game programming and how to outline your project before coding it. This chapter is actually split into four sections after this point. The first section basically creates all the pieces of the game that you will need. Section two will teach you how to move the paddles and section three will teach you how to move the ball. Section four is about how to run the game and keep score.

The final chapter encourages the readers to keep coding! The text tells its readers where to go from here. For example, it talks about how they will need to learn about classes and objects to promote code reuse. It also mentions that you can add music and graphics with pygame. Then it talks about redesigning your game or trying to create your own versions of classic games. Finally it talks about other uses and libraries for Python, such as SciPy, iPython, and MatPlotLib.

When I first heard about this book, I immediately thought of Jason Briggs' book, Python for Kids and the Sande's book, Hello World!: Computer Programming for Kids and Other Beginners. Both of these books are longer and contain a lot more information than "Python Projects for Kids" does. I personally think that of the three, I would choose the Sande book as the easiest for kids to get into. Briggs covers a lot more interesting topics, but he may go just a tad too fast depending on the child. As for "Python Projects for Kids", I feel like there are too many items that aren't covered (classes, exceptions, many Python data constructs, etc). It also feels like pygame itself isn't really covered. There seemed to be a big build up to get to pygame and then there just wasn't much content when we finally got there.

If I were to lay out a strategy for learning Python for children, I would start with Sande and then if the child wanted to learn about games, I would move on to Sweigart's books on creating games with Python (Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python and Making Games with Python & Pygame. Then I might move onto something else, like some of the Python for Minecraft books.

As for this book, I just don't know where it would fit. I believe it was written well but needed some additional polish to push to the top of the heap.

It was perfect for what I needed it for

This book is for kids 10 and up who have no programming experience, and I feel this would not be a good book to give the average kid if they have never programmed before, because this probably will not make them want to learn or be interested (because it is very verbose and the tone resembles a textbook 99% of the time). I think it would may be perfect for someone who is already interested, and wants to learn another programming language, because they can skim through it rather quickly and pick up the key parts to the language, since many languages share a lot of similar things (like if statements and while loops, etc.)

Also take a look at raspberry pi books/tutorials.

The activities included are a build a terminal based calculator, make a terminal based number guessing game, create a two player terminal game by guessing what's in each other's backpack (this is where I stopped), a pygame activity (graphical) that looks a lot like the game pong.

I am a college student who wanted to learn a new language an I had access to this book through my library, so I said why not? I have been programming in Java, and thought I would go through this book to learn the basic syntax of the Python language. It was perfect for what I needed it for.

Good organization and flow, but riddled with errors

I am currently using this book to teach middle and high school students to program in Python. I love the organization and flow of the book, but will not use it for my class next school year, as it is riddled with errors. Also, the programming assignment in Chapter 7, What's in Your Backpack?, is totally inappropriate for beginning Python students.

STILL AMONG THE BEST BOOKS EVER ON INNOVATION!

This was one of the first books that I read on innovation, and it continues to be a favorite.

It's an easy read yet packed with excellent information for someone wanting the "big picture" on innovation as well as a good reference book. Readers shouldn't let the length of this book scare them. Its almost 300 pages don't need to be read in any particular order, and all of the information in it is so meaningful and written so well, that readers will likely want more after having read the entire book.

Innovation to the Core is one of the few books that I've read more than once, and yet I continue to come back for more. I'm still in awe as to how the authors covered so much ground without it feeling overwhelming.

There are a lot of books on innovation on the market today, but this one takes a deep dive and underscores the importance of a systemic and sustainable approach. If I could give it a higher rating than 5 stars, I would!

Excellent primer on corporate innovation

I found this book on a recommended reading list about corporate innovation. I have little education in business management and am not familiar with the literature, but I found this book to be an excellent primer on how large organizations can embed innovation as a core value and process. Instead of relegating innovation to a small R&D cell, the authors advocate building a custom-tailored innovation architecture to embed innovation throughout the organization. My only critique, which is hardly fair, is that the book was published in 2008. I'm left wondering if the intervening five years would change any of the authors' views and recommendations.

About the Author
Frederic H. (“Ric”) Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. He is the lead author of nine undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy.� Dr. Martini is currently affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Manoa and has a long-standing bond with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini is now a President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2005-2007. Dr. Martini was a member of the HAPS committee that established the course curriculum guides for A&P.

Michael J. Timmons received his degrees from Loyola University, Chicago. For more than three decades, he has had a strong commitment to teaching nursing and pre-professional students at Moraine Valley Community College (outside Chicago). In 2005-2006, Professor Timmons was honored with the Professor of the Year Award by Moraine Valley Community College and the Excellence award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development for his outstanding contributions to teaching, leadership, and student learning. He has also been the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award by the Illinois Community College Board of Trustees. His areas of interest include biomedical photography, crafting illustration programs, and developing instructional technology learning systems. He is a national and regional presenter at the League for Innovation Conferences on Information Technology for Colleges and Universities and at Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) meetings.

�Robert B. Tallitsch received his Ph.D. in physiology with an anatomy minor from the university of Wisconsin�–Madison. Since then, he has been on the biology faculty at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. His teaching responsibilities include Human Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, and Kinesiology. In seven out of the last nine years, Dr. Tallitsch has been designated as one of a select number of “unofficial teachers of the year” by the graduating seniors at Augustana College. Dr. Tallitsch serves as a visiting faculty member at the Foreign Languages Faculty at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology (Beijing, China) and also at the Foreign Languages Faculty at Central China Normal University (Wuhan, China).

Not much difference between editions

I used the previous (7th) edition and got an "A" in my online Anatomy and Physiology class. From what I could tell, there was no difference between the cheaper 7th edition and the ridiculously priced 8th edition except for the picture on the cover!

I gave the book three stars because it was unclear and lacked details in so many areas that it left me confused. I had to clarify a lot of issues by looking them up online.

I resold my book after I was finished with it for the same amount of money I paid for it so all it cost me was the initial shipping fee.

FYI - I quit buying books at my campus bookstore after the first semester and have saved over $1000.00 so far, just by buying used, previous editions.

The latest ploy these unscrupulous bookstores use is to package up a bunch of useless items with the necessary textbook and sell the "bundle" at an outrageous price. It is criminal.

I always ask the instructors before hand what other materials are required and if I can use the previous edition. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. Occasionally a professor will insist on the current edition and I still save a ton of money buying it used on Amazon.com. When I am finished, I re-sell them and usually get all my money back!

We need to get the word out about the college bookstore textbook scams! It is an OUTRAGE!

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.

I bought the book the first time because I had to. I bought it the second time because I wanted to.

I am a Nursing student. I had to have two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology for Nursing. Like most students, I sold the book back to the bookstore after the second semester. MISTAKE! About half-way through my first semester of Nursing I found myself wishing I had the old A&P book again. So, I went and bought it.

If there is anything you want to know about A&P, this book has it! What a marvelous book!

It's not a book for the casual reader; find something else for that. But if you want to know the details of the body and how it works, BUY THIS BOOK!

Most of the chapters have a beginning that kinda describes the particular section of the body. The remainder of the chapter then goes into details, and I mean details - as much as you can possibly want.

I cannot imagine a better-written book anywhere!

Outstanding Read.

I received this book yesterday on my Kindle and read the entire book. This is a real life story on the war in Afghanistan and allows the American People to understand what is actually taking place in this country. While it gives us the truth about how the political agenda is, it gives an even better account what our troops give to our Country. God Bless our Troops for their service. Thanks to Michael Golembesky for writing this account of his service to our country.

LEVEL 10 READ

LEVEL ZERO HEROES is one of but a handful of first account books of combat in Iraq & Afghanistan I've read to date. Generally, I prefer to wait for time to pass and history to sort out the actual details. But what I'm finding is that, given the nature of communication in the current age, authors are able to compile information and accurately recreate events much faster and often with greater detail than in past conflicts. And Michael Golembesky's memoir is a perfect example of just that.
As a chronicle of combat in the hinterlands of Afghanistan, Golembesky gives us insight into the daily lives of his MARSOC (Marine Special Operations Command) unit (i.e. Force Recon Marines), their interaction among themselves, Afghan National Police (ANP) and Afghan National Army (ANA) personnel stationed alongside, as well as the US Army's 82nd Airborne and local dignitaries - and, of course, the ever present Taliban.
In doing so, we're made privy to the bonds formed in battle (and the bitterness). The bonds with his brothers in arms, the bitterness toward the local dignitaries (whose loyalty I a always in question), as well as the overall Battalion Commander (an 82nd Airborne Colonel). The Battalion Commander because he all too often seems preoccupied with "cooperating" with the locals at the expense - and sometimes the safety - of those under his command.
Coupled with the insane Rules of Engagement and you have a very sound picture of the way our nation fights it's wars these days - and perhaps why we're still fighting there 13 years later. But what stands out above all else is Golebesky's (or Ski's) forthright manner in telling the story. He pulls no punches. Makes no excuses. And fumes right along with the reader at the insanity of it all. In fact, I've heard LEVEL ZERO HEROES described as this generation's CATCH-22. Not certain I'd go that far - but it does skirt around the edges of getting there. Only because of Ski's brutal honesty.
Anyone whose served in the Middle East recently, or been in combat the past 50 years or more can relate - and anyone who's ever been a Force Recon Marine will relate VERY well. I know I did. And Ski's job as a Joint Tactical Air Controller (JTAC), who calls in bombing runs on enemy positions, is a particularly dicey one. Placing him in everyone's bullseye. His fellow Marines depend in him for assistance, his Battalion Commander 2nd guesses his every move, and JAG lawyers abound awaiting his mistakes.
The writing, though, flows easily. Almost stream of consciousness. The tense moments, be they battle scenes or in-rank politics ;often the same) are quite tense - but reassuring. No horrific bloody scenes are bared to scare the young ones, though the ferocity of combat is not lost on the reader either.
All in all a first rate memoir.

Couldn't put it down! I was Transported into the field with these incredible men and could feel what they felt- a page turner that I didn't want to end. Marine special op have a tough enough time but this gives insight as to the real life frustrations! No candy coated view but an amazing story of these brave Marines that just blew my mind ! You think you know ? You really don't until you read this account -This book should be made into a movie - it will rock your socks !
