Pancreatic Cancer: A Patient and His Doctor Balance Hope and Truth (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book), by Michael J. Lippe, Dung T. Le

Michael J. Lippe was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007. This is his story, and the story of pancreatic cancer, narrated by Lippe and Dr. Dung T. Le, the physician who is treating him.

In telling these stories, Lippe and Le alternate chapters. Lippe writes about the early signs that something was wrong; Le continues with a description of pancreatic cancer, its symptoms, and its treatments. Lippe talks about his prognosis, contemplates the prospect of death, and describes how he began to cope; Le explains the importance, for both doctor and patient, of balancing hope and truth. Lippe speaks frankly about the toll the disease takes on his marriage and family; Le offers a general picture of what most patients can expect with their illness. The book concludes with Lippe and Le’s reflections on their partnership in treating cancer, lessons they have learned, and their thoughts about the positive things that sometimes emerge from illness.

Pancreatic Cancer offers clear explanations of what the disease is, describes what people with the disease will feel physically and mentally, and discusses current treatments and future directions of research. The authors hope that their honest yet hopeful perspective will help all people with cancer and those who care about them.

I would recommend this book to all health professionals who care for patients with pancreatic cancer (both novice and seasoned), as well as those who are adjusting to a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

An authoritative manual of instructions... This book is highly recommended.

(M. G. Paregian)

Brief (at just 171 pages) but powerful, this straightforward book is both sobering and inspiring.

(Hopkins Medicine)

No matter how experienced a professional might be in dealing with patients with pancreatic cancer, it is refreshing to hear from the patient's perspective, reading how they navigate through the system before they land in our clinic and receive our care. Overall, I would recommend this book to all health professionals who care for patients with pancreatic cancer (both novice and seasoned), as well as those who are adjusting to a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

(Raymond Chan Cancer Forum)

This book is excellent. It is positive and compassionate... It would make a useful contribution to a library.

(Macmillan Cancer Support)

This book is a valuable source of intimate details about Pancreatic Disease and related problems... Highly recommended for the practicing instructions and frank discussions of personal and family preparation along with the current treatments that are available.

Informative and Insightful
By CLG
I read this book prior to going to my mother's oncologist for her pancreatic cancer treatment post her Whipple procedure (in my mother's case, her entire pancreas was removed, not partial as the norm, in addition to typical re-sectioning/partial removal of the intestine and stomach). My mother, unfortunately, had complications post Whipple, but finally came through ready for the next step. Due to the scan and CA-19-9 tumor marker blood test, it was obvious the cancer had spread to her liver, omentum lining, and right kidney. Chemo was the next step and what type of chemotherapy was the question I had upon entering the oncology office with my parents. The book was GREAT in understanding the possible drug cocktails available, yet with the progress since the book was published, there were additional options per my mother's oncologist. I felt very empowered through my research, especially with this book, to know what kind of questions to ask the doctor that day. I knew the drug cocktails and what each one targeted when used in chemo treatments. This book gave me strength when I knew that no matter what, the prognosis was not really what any of my family members wanted to hear. It was heart-breaking to watch my mother and father when the doctor announced what the various prognoses would be based on no treatment, chemo cocktail one and chemo cocktail two. I knew I had to be the strong one during this time...I could breakdown in sadness later, in private.

The other aspect of the book centered around a pancreatic cancer patient, in a different situation than my mother yet still having a similar prognosis. His candid writing was insightful in helping me understand my mother's mood swings and explanations for what she sees for her remaining days. I have used many of his comments with my mother in hope that it will give her added strength and hope.

Get this book to help you be informed on chemo treatments for pancreatic cancer. It is the next best thing to reading medical journals. It has been worth every penny for me when helping my aging mother understand the drugs, possibilities and prognosis for her health and life. Also some hope for one of the worst kinds of cancer - pancreatic.

Required Reading for Adults with Serious Diseases and a Familyy
By laup
This is a very welcome and interesting book, even if the subject is frightening--or perhaps because it is so frightening. The author and his oncologist-physician have co-written a book describing events from diagnosis of a dread disease (pancreatic cancer) through several years of treatment, including chemotherapy. The author has been unusually fortunate to have survived far longer than is normal, and to have been functional, productive, and capable of enjoying life through much of that period. Each year is precious. The author describes effectively how it feels to receive the diagnosis and to cope as best one can. He also describes well the burdens on the care taker and the ways in which he (and similar patients) increase that burden unfairly without intending to do so. He also describes what activities and choices, sometimes "accidental," have turned out to help a great deal, such as tending to practical affairs on the one end (e.g., remaking his will) to relaxing at a hotel near the hospital after chemotherapy, rather than rushing back home at the other end. There is much that is uplifting, constructive, and practical. The physician's chapters provide nuanced and more technical insights about the disease, diagnosis and treatment, and patient-physician relationships. All told, this is a book that will be of great value to many people (patients and their caregivers), and will be very interesting to many more.

Excellent Narrative re Pancreatic Cancer Treatment
By Angela M.
This book contains the information I wanted to know when my brother, Jim McCartney, was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in mid-August 2010. This book contains excellent narratives about the treatment of pancreatic cancer by the patient, his caregiver, and his doctor. The book clearly details the torturous trail of pancreatic cancer. Kudos to the doctor/patient relationship that is ideal and so very important. The balance of hope and trust is hard to achieve as successfully as described in this book.
