overall very satisfactory except for one detail

This is an excellent package for self-study; I have found it useful to study the book(s) at home and listen to the CDs in the car (study the books before listening or the CDs won't make sense!).
My one complaint, and it's minor, is that the Hebrew printed in the books is in light blue and approximately 10-point type, which makes the nikud (vowel points) almost illegible without magnification! At very least volume One, 'Essential', which is for absolute beginners, should have the printing larger and in black!
Otherwise this course is modestly priced for all it contains, and the books and CD's intelligently planned and well-produced. Absolutely no complaints about the content; I would highly recommend it, along with the use of a hand-held magnifier!

Amazing value for a great course!

I bought this course with some misgivings (I ordered it before it was released), because there was no copy available for me to examine -- but when I received it, I was blown away. This is a WONDERFUL course!

As it says in the listing, you get NINE CDs and three books (Essential, Intermediate, and Advanced levels). But the listing says there are 464 pages, which is wrong. The three books put together total a whopping 1,276 pages, and cover the language in depth. It's not just lists of words and expressions to memorize, either. They explain in clear and simple terms how to create your own sentences, to express your own thoughts.

Best of all, there is plenty of practice material, all with answer keys so you can check and correct any mistakes. That's vital when you're studying on your own.

I'm so impressed by the new Living Language series, and the incredibly low price, that I will be acquiring more languages to add to my collection.

A great introduction to Hebrew; Perfect for self-study

The first thing I noticed when I received my copy of Living Language’s Hebrew course was the sheer volume of materials I got for such a low price. As you can see in the pictures I have uploaded, you will receive three textbooks and 9 CDs. When I purchased this set, I thought that the 3 “textbooks” might be thin books that don’t cover much material and was just clever marketing. I was WRONG. Each book is the size of a typical textbook (the Intermediate book in the set is a bit of a monster in itself). Not to be defined only by quantity, however, Living Language adds quality to the mix. The audio tracks are professionally recorded and the speakers are natives. The audio covers most of each book, which is a breath of fresh air after going through other language courses whose audio support was sparse. Also, the texts themselves are quite good as each lesson introduces new vocabulary, grammar, and dialogue. It also re-uses and continues to build on past lessons so that the student doesn’t forget what he/she has already learned. All Hebrew writing is written in the Hebrew alphabet (with vowels), a Romanized version of the language (aka – English letters), and, of course, includes a translation into English. Some purists may argue that this hinders real language acquisition as the student may choose to use the Romanized Hebrew as a crutch – just keep in mind that the Advanced book uses only the Hebrew alphabet (with vowels) and the English translation.

-Great introduction to the language
- Value for money cannot be beat; the volume of materials included is impressive
- Audio is of very good quality and covers much of the book
-The audio itself includes the Hebrew and English versions of the text. This means that you can use it on the go, without the need for the book to be present.
- Short vowels are included in all texts.
-There is a very handy reference section in the back of each book that covers everything from verb conjugation in all the tenses to the printed and cursive versions of the Hebrew alphabet.
- Living Language has a FREE online component for their courses. This is very helpful for learning vocabulary when you don’t want to go fetch the book. Heck, you can go online right now and try a lesson or two just to see if Hebrew is right for you!

CONS
- No glossary included in the book
- Some purists may believe that Romanized language learning (as opposed to reading and writing in the native alphabet) can be hindering. Of course, the student can always ignore this and focus on the Hebrew aleph bet if they want a challenge.

Overall, I highly recommend this course. It is perfect for those of us who study at home as it combines a strong group of textbooks with good, comprehensive audio.

Straightforward overview of C

With their low cost and their wide availability in college bookstores, the Schaum's Outline Series has helped many students in the past decades. In technical areas, the books in the Series are noted for being example wizards, and therefore are also of assistance to instructors. In this book on C programming, the author has continued this tradition, and has produced a book that turns out to be one of the best ways to learn this language. C can be difficult and abtruse at times, particularly in the use of pointer arithmetic, in string manipulation, and in memory management, but the author, again through many examples, clears up nicely any nagging issues in writing programs in C. C is still heavily used in applications, particularly when performance is an issue, and only in recent years has it been seriously replaced by its descendant, C++. The material in the book is pretty standard, and no really imaginative uses of C are outlined, such as how to use C to do self-reference function calling or how to emulate functional programming using C. However, for one needing an introduction to C, or for one who is teaching C in the classroom, this book would be a good supplement if cognizance is taken of current programming standards in C.

A Teaching Reference, And A Great Book

C is not a large language, there's not a lot to remember a far as conditionals, types, etc... but there is much to learn. This book gives only the facts and not dogma or methodologies, and the examples are to the point as they should be. This book really should be hardbound and sitting next to your copy of The C Programming language by DR and BK. This manila tome is truly one of the hidden gems you can get for 15 bucks. Use it until the pages fall apart, by then you will have assimulated it's worthwhile knowledge.

You really have to enjoy this book for it's straightforwardness. If you like the "Dummies" series, this book will progress a bit too fast for you, for it is rather complete in it's description of the language features. But if you read and digest technical matters in one or two (or three) gulps, you'll benefit from this book.

I had read this book in 1999 to brush up my C programming skills. Today in 2013 when I had to look back at the concepts I ordered the same book and followed through. If you are serious about programming please solve each and every exercise/task at the end of each chapter. Don't buy this book if you want to learn programming in 24 hours! Sorry :)

Sociolinguist Florian Coulmas, editor of The Handbook of Sociolinguistics and associate editor of The International Journal of the Sociology of Language, draws on disciplines ranging from psychology to epigraphy to present a work that is both far-reaching in its scope and deep enough to be of interest to serious theorists.

The encyclopedia itself consists of articles and entries of various lengths, all laid out in a typical A-to-Z format, with copious cross-referencing providing a wealth of threads for the inveterate browser. The entries themselves range from short definitions of concepts to longer articles on more complex topics, such as morphogenesis (the idea that all writing can be traced back to a single system), orthographic reform, and dyslexia. Over 400 figures and 1,600 tables illustrate not only the world's orthographies but also such things as the Mormon alphabet, the elements comprising Mayan logograms (written signs representing whole words), and Babylonian clay tablets. All this, plus a comprehensive bibliography, makes The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems an indispensable reference work for scholars and a thoroughly enjoyable browse for anyone interested in human communication.

Nearly 80 international scholars, the editors among them, have contributed entries in The World's Writing Systems covering all scripts officially used throughout the world as well as their historical origins, each with an extensive bibliography. Included are tables of alphabets and syllabaries as well as script samples, usually featuring transliteration, transcription, and gloss of the text. The essays are grouped by topics, but a detailed index guides the user to specific terms or languages desired. There is even a section with entries treating notation systems used for music and movement. The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Writing Systems is arranged in dictionary format without an index, but with a substantial bibliography. Coulmas's (Writing Systems of the World, Blackwell, 1989) coverage is not nearly as comprehensive as the Oxford publication. In the article on the Cree Syllabary all scripts are mentioned, but tables are not provided for Inuktitut (Inuit language) or Chipewyan. "Gothic" script is discussed with only incidental reference to the term Fraktur, for which an interesting history is provided in the Oxford work. This, however, does not mean that the Coulmas encyclopedia is not a useful reference tool. Both publications are recommended for most reference collections, but The World's Writing Systems is clearly the more technically detailed. The determining factors for purchase will be price and needs of library clientele. There is a third choice for public or school libraries with limited resources: Akira Nakanishi's Writing Systems of the World (Tuttle, 1980). This inexpensive (pap. $14.95) ready-reference tool concentrates on modern languages and their scripts, with examples from newspapers, a color map of world writing systems, an index, and a bibliography.?Edward K. A fascinating vademecum

This is the only book that I have yet found that compares to David Diringer's -The Alphabet: A Key to the History of Mankind-.

It is not quite so complete in its coverage of obscure scripts as Diringer, and it makes far fewer attempts to analyse the history of the scripts. On the other hand, because it covers less such territory, the exemplars of the scripts and the tables of the characters and their values in this book are far more legible. The alphabetic arrangement of the material makes it easy to find which system you want.

Another of this book's strengths is that at least some attempt is made to explain how the phonemes of the many languages are expressed by the scripts in question; in many languages, from Tibetan to English, the relationship between alphabet and speech is subtle and complex. Obviously, this information will be cursory and incomplete, but having some is better than having none, and it is at least handy to know whether you are dealing with phonemic or with etymological spellings. This will help you not only to transliterate, but also to read, them.

If you are fascinated by the history of writing, and obscure scripts and arcane alphabets, you NEED this book, and will spend hours leafing through it.

Not Quite the Best

After reading previous reviews, I was excited about flipping through my own copy of the encyclopedia; however, I quickly became disappointed. For all the work and study that went into the production of the book, there is no doubt to its value to the linguistic community; however, keep the following points in mind: 1) the entry on the Anglo Saxon alphabet contradicts itself (identifying 25 letters in the text, but showing a different set of 25 letters, demonstrating 26 in total). 2) The entry on the misnamed "Mormon Alphabet" is appalling--those who used it over a century ago called it the Deseret Alphabet; and it's creation was commissioned by Brigham Young in the 1840s--it was not reveled to Joseph Smith on Gold Plates in the 1830; to claim such shows marked assumptions of the author based solely on previously-known knowledge of the sect.

Furthermore, the Figures and table are of photocopies quality, some of the characters so small that distinction between them cannot be easily recognized. Nor do the tables of alphabets line up with their entries. Nor are the tables uniform, but seem to be cut-and-paste tables from other sources.

The text has value, but some of the scholarship is dubious, and the graphic presentation is shambles.

Great overview of a fascinating tpic

This book is a great starting place for people who are interesting in the many ways people have encoded language by means of writing. The descriptions of most systems are complete enough that one can get a real feel for how they work (if not perhaps all the details of the most complex systems). It also includes brief articles on topics such as calligraphy, the status of alphabetic writing versus other systems, and the like. While some of these are subjects of heated scholarly debate, Coulmas provides balanced explanations of the issues.A wonderful overview of the intricate and beautiful ways people write the world over.Other books that would interest readers of this are:"The World's Writing Systems" from Oxford University Press is the best single reference for complete descriptions of scripts. But at nearly [$$$] in hardcover, it's relatively inaccessible to the general reader. It's also targeted to a more professional audience and is not as good for browsing around. As an anthology of articles by experts it is both more authoritative, and a bit more uneven than Coulmas."Writing Systems: A Linguistic Introduction" by Geoffrey Sampsonis more of a discussion of the issues raised for linguistics by a variety of writing systems. Sampson's book includes a detailed discussion of the Chinese system.

A doctor, his slave and two lawmen with competing loyalties must solve a mystery while surviving the battle of Antietam. Everyone has their secrets, nothing and no one is what they seem and the body count only grows.

Love Strong As Death is set in the Civil War and centers on the deadliest day of that conflict, but it is much more than that. It is a murder mystery with more twists and turns than the Antietam Creek.

Three days before the battle, two men lie dead on the bank of that creek, dueling pistols in their hands. Two lawmen with competing loyalties investigate the case. Albrecht Hiedler is the local county sheriff; John Dingleberry is a federal marshal. They soon discover one of the duelers is black, which is unheard-of.

They call a local doctor in to examine the bodies. Solon Carter is a brilliant physician with an odd secret: he has never learned to read and write. He is an Abolitionist, fundamentally opposed to the institution of slavery, but he owns a slave. Columbia is mentally retarded but can read, and in fact remembers everything she reads. She is Carter's secretary and his ward.

The doctor and the lawmen discover that the white dueler, a local merchant named Peter Kraft, has two tons of gold bars in his storehouse. They can't decide what to do with it, so they lock it in the doctor's storehouse. Columbia then points out an odd fact that the three men confirm: each of the duelers was killed with his own pistol. The case becomes a murder investigation.

The doctor does an autopsy on Kraft's body. He discovers that the dead man's eyes had been removed and replaced with lead balls.

The next day a man and woman arrive at Dr. Carter's home. Hermann von Habsburg is the brother-in-law of the late Peter Kraft and his presumptive heir; he is an exiled member of one of the royal families of Europe; and he is senile and cannot speak. His daughter Maria handles his business affairs. The doctor and the lawmen tell her about the strange circumstances of her uncle's death but not about the gold.

That night the doctor's storehouse catches fire. The gold bars ignite, something gold is not supposed to do, and burn with a furious flame. He is left the next morning to explain to the lawmen what happened.

The three men struggle to make sense of the matter. They learn a few things from a local slave but end up more confused than ever. They discover that the gold bars were not gold at all but a strange substance called uranium. It is a worthless metal but it is one of the few substances that is as dense as gold. And the world supply of the metal is controlled by the von Habsburg family.

Early the next morning, Maria von Habsburg and her father arrive at the doctor's door unexpectedly. A battle was starting and she did not know where else to turn. The doctor puts her, her father and Columbia into his buggy and heads away from the sound of the battle. He unwittingly sends them into the cornfield which is to see the deadliest action of the battle of Antietam. Almost immediately, Doctor Carter and Maria become separated from his slave and her father. For the next few days they must struggle to stay alive and solve a mystery that threatens to consume them.

Love Strong As Death is meticulously researched, bringing the reader through an almost hour-by-hour chronicle of the deadliest single day in American history. It is also a fast-paced thriller and a gripping mystery.

Refreshingly different--again

Last year in a review of Mr. Jackson's Above the Fray: a Novel of the Union Balloon Corps, I wrote that that book was "highly entertaining, educational..., well written and edited, and [a] completely absorbing tale." This is also true of his most recent book, Love Strong as Death.

The publisher's blurb above provides the best teaser for the story itself, so in the interest of further teasing those who, like me, tire of seemingly endless repetitions of formulaic plots, situations, and characters, I'll merely add that for me, the fullest enjoyment comes from the novel elements of the characters, setting, and plot devices, which are many. It is hard to find novelty in fiction, and it is an achievement worth cherishing and promoting when it appears. Recommended!

If you like historical fiction, civil war history, murder mysteries, or just plain great writing, you will love this book. Jackson has a unique ability to weave the leftover bits of a bygone culture that we call history into a tangible world that seems to live and breathe on its own.
