Pass On This Book

I am always hesitant to leave a negative review on a product, but this is a book you just shouldn't purchase. I own a website design / SEO business and try to stay on top of new information, so I bought a couple of books to see what folks are doing that I may not be on top of in the SEO world. Without going into great detail, here are my main issues with this book.

First, I'm assuming this is a self-published book. The spelling and grammar throughout the book are fraught with significant errors, to the degree this quickly becomes a distraction and difficult to read. For me, this is a surprise since the author apparently has his Ph.D., I expect more from someone with this level of education.

Second, assuming a reader is looking for detailed information on SEO how-to in this book for SEO, this book doesn't have it, even for beginners. It is full of broad, sweeping statements and little to no details on the actual process of incorporating effective SEO into a plan. The generic information is repeated to fill content but empty of real information.

I'm giving this two stars instead of one because if you are a total beginner to search engine optimization, you may pick up a theory or idea that you can research in other places for details. With this said, I certainly wouldn't recommend this book to anyone of any level of understanding. There are many better options on Amazon to learn from.

This is a powerful resource not just on SEO but for growing a business. It covers all the essential information on SEO, also covers local marketing and even pay-per-click campaigns. Some areas are covered, but looks like this was on purpose, everything is easy to understand and it doesn't make you fall asleep like reading an encyclopedia. For me, I feel as though I gained a valuable, all encompassing picture of SEO and it will help me to create a strategy to move forward with ranking goals!

Reading it entirely I have understood about the importance of keyword research. Too difficult for its target readers

This book combines crafts with text, explaining the medieval culture of guilds, with apprentices, journeymen, and master craftsmen. Although written for 3rd to 7th graders, only one of the 8 crafts suggested in this juvenile book is actually achievable by juveniles. Many other books are better in both text and craft suggestions. The reading level is ages 9-12, but you'd have to be 16 or older to be able to manage the crafts.

Handy & Useful Reference!

The Manga University Background Collection Workbook is actually a collection of pre-drawn backgrounds that you can use for your own manga works. There are currently about 3 workbooks; this second part being a background collection of highrise buildings and city streets in Japan.

The pictures are divided into 2 parts; one in plain ink, and the other fully done in ink and tone. Depending on your preferences, you can use the one in plain ink and do your own “toning”, or you can just used the finished background.

There’s also an “advanced technique” section that teaches you advanced screen tones technique. Personally, I find this greatly useful and handy, although I would greatly appreciate if there were MORE examples in the book! It seems a little too “thin”, but then again, maybe that’s why it’s called a “workbook”. -_-0

Overall, the workbook makes for a really handy reference for both beginners and intermediate artists alike. Give this a try if you have trouble drawing backgrounds or would like to learn and practice drawing backgrounds.

excellent reference material for comic artists

This book doesn't claim to be a "how to draw" manual, which is good, because it isn't! That being said, professional manga artists frequently use pre-rendered backgrounds in their scenes, whether directly clipped or traced. These are free to use directly for non-commercial purposes, but are much more useful as "pose reference" for drawing your own backgrounds. While other books in this series, such as Manga University: I-C Background Collection Workbook Volume 3: Japanese Neighborhoods have focused on sleepy domestic neighborhoods and small, family stores, this one is full of busy downtown commercial areas. Each picture has two versions: plain lineart and screentoned. In the back of the book, several pictures are given special treatment, such as lighting effects and correctly inserting characters into the foreground. At the very back, there are two full pages of close-up details - things such as vending machines, public telephones, and utility poles, that, when added to a drawing, make it seem very much alive. Whether you're a comic artist or do stand-alone illustrations, this book definitely helps flesh out your work with realistic backgrounds.

Canadians will be smug

The comparison is a great idea for a book, carried out fairly well. The focus is mostly the 1810-1890 and in the US, almost entirely the West. This is a bit misleading because the Indian wars in the East ran from the early 1600s through the early 1800s, and included quite high casualties on both sides, as in the disaster Indians inflicted on St Clair's army in the 1790s. This is an issue because for all their epic quality, the wars in the West were smaller in scale and cost fewer soldier's lives.

Such events in Canada are described as smaller in scale and much less violent--again the time frame alters perceptions, because French Canada used Indian allies in warring with the British colonies, and the scope of those wars included chunks of Canada. The book is a narrative of campaigns and contexts, and has fewer of the character sketches and subplots that are typical in current history writing.

By far the bloodiest were in Mexico. The Caste War in the Yucatan (1848-1900) may have consumed 200,000 lives, and the era of Comanche raids deep into Mexico reduced large areas to something like chaos.

I found the accounts of the US-Apache wars to be the most interesting. Overall the book is a good read, the prose fairly good. Maps are adequate. If you are Canadian, you may be a bit smug. Still, comparing violence and history this way is I think a very useful endeavor for historians.

The protagonist's arrogance and greed lead to his undoing

Early in the book, a police lieutenant tells the protagonist that being overconfident is a sure way to get sucker-punched but the latter doesn't heed the warning. The plot is rather typical: a cad marries a homely rich heiress for money and then plots to murder her with the help of her comely secretary. The story is told in flashback so the outcome is more or less known from the start. Chase still manages to add a few twists and turns along the way. But there's a feeling you've read something like it before.

This saturation was to such an extent that in 2005, Mikhail Saakashvili, the current president of Georgia, claimed that 'in the past 15 years... Georgia was not ruled by [former President] Shevardnadze, but by thieves-in-law.'

Following peaceful regime change with 2003's Rose Revolution, Georgia prioritised reform of the criminal justice system generally, and an attack on the thieves-in-law specifically, using anti-organized crime policies that emulated approaches in Italy and America. Criminalization of association with thieves-in-law, radical reforms of the police and prisons, educational change, and controversial, draconian and extra-legal measures, amounted to arguably the most sustained anti-mafia policy implemented in any post-Soviet country - a policy the government believed would pull Georgia out of the Soviet past, declaring it a resounding success.

Utilising unique access to primary sources of data, including police files, court cases, archives and expert interviews, Reorganizing Crime: Mafia and Anti-Mafia in Post-Soviet Georgia charts both the longevity and the sudden decline of the thieves-in-law, exploring the changes in the resilience levels of members carrying this elite criminal status, and how this resilience has been so effectively compromised since 2005. Through an innovative and engaging analysis of this little known and often misunderstood cohort of organised crime, this book engages with contemporary debates on understanding the resilience of so-called dark networks, such as organized crime groups and terrorist cells, and tests the theories of how and why success in challenging such organizations can occur.

Dr Gavin Slade is a research fellow in criminology at the University of Toronto, Canada, having gained his PhD in Law from the University of Oxford in 2011. He is primarily interested in organized crime and prison sociology; in particular, criminological questions arising from post-Soviet societies, having lived and worked in Russia and Georgia for almost seven years. He maintains a broad interest in criminal justice reform in transitional contexts and has worked in the non-governmental sector in Georgia on this matter.
