About the Author
During his fifty-five-year career, Clifford D. Simak produced some of the most iconic science fiction stories ever written. Born in 1904 on a farm in southwestern Wisconsin, Simak got a job at a small-town newspaper in 1929 and eventually became news editor of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune,�writing fiction in his spare time.

Simak was best known for the book�City,�a reaction to the horrors of World War II, and for his novel�Way Station.�In 1953�City�was awarded the International Fantasy Award, and in following years, Simak won three Hugo Awards and a Nebula Award. A Gem That You Won't Forget

It is the future and Mankind has spread to the stars like seeds before the wind. One star system, though, shrouded in mystery, has defied Man's every attempt to visit it. Every expedition to 61 Cygni has found its path inexplicably deflected and has been forced to return home in frustration. In desperation, special agent Asher Sutton was sent on a solo mission, but unlike the others he did not return and 61 Cygni was quietly forgotten.
As the book begins, twenty years have passed and, against all odds, Asher Sutton has returned. The mystery only deepens when it is discovered that Asher's ship was damaged many years ago in a crash that left it completely disabled and ought to have killed its sole passenger. The conclusion becomes inescapable; Asher Sutton died but now he's back. As the story develops, we discover Asher is not alone and it's not clear that he's even entirely human. But most importantly, Asher returns bearing an idea that will shake Mankind's beliefs to their foundations.
In Time and Again, Mankind is spread thin across the stars and to help hold the frontier he has created biological androids. Created in the lab by chemical means, androids are sterile and cannot reproduce but in all other respects are as human as their creators. None the less, androids are treated as property and bear a mark on their foreheads to distinguish them from "true" humans.
Androids dream of one day being acknowledged and treated as the equals of the "humans" and Asher's idea is the key for which they have been searching. Asher soon becomes the center of a struggle between three groups; humans of the present who fear any new idea that might loosen Mankind's tenuous grip on the stars, humans of the future who, via time travel, are waging a quiet war to alter the past to maintain the current status quo, and the androids of the future who struggle to let Asher's idea be born.
Simak weaves these disparate elements into a delicious story. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A true sci-fi classic winner!

Time and Again opens in a distant future on earth that includes androids, robots, interactive television, weather control, mentophones - an ingenious device that allows instantaneous interstellar communication, dramatically extended life spans, travel to distant star systems and a humanity that has conquered the galaxy and spread its seed far and wide. After a 20 year absence, Asher Sutton returns to earth from an expedition to 61 Cygni, a system that until now has defeated every attempt at landing and exploration. In the attempt, Sutton has miraculously survived a crash that left his ship disabled and, by all odds, should have killed him. His ship has somehow managed to return to earth apparently without the actual ability to do so and Sutton, through some extraordinary feat of bio-medical engineering, appears to have been modified into something that is considerably less than completely human. He is mentally linked to someone he refers to as "Johnny". The administration on earth wonder what all of this can possibly mean.

On the surface, Time and Again is a thrilling story of time travel. Sutton is carrying a book which he has not yet actually written - a summary of his philosphies that, in a not too distant future, will result in the achievement of the dreams of the Android Equality League, their right to be recognized as sentient beings and a release from their treatment as mere property. But, before the book can even be actually written, Sutton must survive assassination attempts by revisionists - humans from the future who are using time travel as the means to prevent its publication.

Simak's personal credo that reflects his quiet midwest upbringing, his pastoral approach to the science fiction genre and his concerns about humanity and its use of technology as a means to violent conflict are never very far from the surface. Indeed, they rather shine through the writing like a beacon. But, make no mistake - Simak never falls into the trap of preaching. The clear social commentary is never intrusive and never detracts for even an instant from an exciting story line.

In Time and Again, Simak was openly critical of humanity's impression of its own importance in the universe - "Not by strength did he hold his starry outposts, but by something else ... by depth of human character, by his colossal conceit, by his ferocious conviction that Man was the greatest living thing the galaxy had ever spawned. All this in spite of much evidence that he was not ... evidence that he took and evaluated and cast aside, scornful of any greatness that was not ruthless and aggressive".

He also used comedy as a vehicle to make a dark statement against weapons. He jests about "the code" having been changed to require everyone under age 100 to bear arms as a way of passing comment on his feelings against the US's unique constitutional amendment regarding the "right" to bear arms. His philosophical argument against Sutton's attempted use of the Christian commandment "Thou shalt not kill" as an exemption from the code is perhaps a little blunt but does serve to point out some of the ironies involved in, for example, a right wing Bible Belt fundamentalist Christian packin' an iron.

Finally, his creation of the Android Equality League represents an ingenious platform from which Simak can express his concerns about the ethical issues related to the problems of advanced artificial intelligence and voice his courageous, clear condemnation of the white's treatment of black people in the 1960s US and his support of the civil rights movement.

In Time and Again, Simak has created a story that many have suggested is his finest work. I was excited with the turn of every page and found I couldn't disagree with them!

An incredibly good read - out "Heinleins" Heinlein!

This book is really about religion and time. About the power
of religion and about the cost one can pay for the knowing
the truth. The book deals with the personal sacrifice,
loneliness and betrayal that important historical
figures, past, present and future, often endure. Asher Sutton is
the ultimate imperfect, reluctant hero.

Those of you who love Heinlein will undoubtedly enjoy
this book - I couldn't recommend it any more thoroughly.
I read City (Simak's most acclaimed book) and thought
that "Time and Again" was easily a superior work

One of the better harmonica books out there

After you learn to play notes on the harmonica, you realize what you really want to do it play 2nd position and play bends. Unfortunatly, there are very few harmonica books with this type of music. Many just have old standards in first poistion which is not bluesy. Others like music of Sonny Boy Williamson, are too advanced for most people. This is a nice book for a rookie that wants something more and has some easy bends.

Excellent book

I was hesitant about buying this book because some of the songs I was just not interested in such as the Christmas songs and children's songs. I am glad I went ahead and bought it. This book teaches you how to take any song you want and make it Bluesy. In fact, using the kids songs was ingenius. Everybody knows the melody... so you know where you are starting from...then Gindick shows you how to add a little rhythm... add a note...accent another note, drop a note here and there and substitute a blues note...You will be amazed what he does on a simple song. I will never think of "Old MacDonald" in the same way. He does an amazing job with it on the cd and tab. If you want to play harp with bluesy style, don't hesitate to buy this book. I have a dozen or so Harp books and this by far is the best!

Not there yet but I am reading / studying the book & the CD and slowly developing some skills.in the beginning book Harmonica for the musically Hopeful book by Jon and this also is a great book but I have to go slower than the teacher.Great Books. ANS

About the Author
Lauren Child attended art school and did "lots of other things" before writing CLARICE BEAN, THAT'S ME. She designed ceramics for children, worked as an artist's assistant, and created lampshades for her own company. About the inspiration for this book—her first for Candlewick Press—she says, "I grew up with an older sister who read a lot and a younger sister who I had to share a room with whenever we had visitors (which was a lot, and my sister was very untidy, and guess who had to clean up the mess.)"

I really like the Clarice Bean books that have been re-released by Candlewick this year. These must be some of the nicest paperbacks available, swathed in overly large covers that sport updated cover art. They are priced the same as a traditional softcover, but are bigger and smoother - like paperbacks on steroids. The very best part of these releases is the inside flap, where Lauren Child provides some personal history. For this book, she recounts watching television when she should have been working (so even famous artists fall prey) and stumbling upon a program about planets. That got her thinking about how her Clarice would approach the environment ... and voila, a book was born.

Clarice Bean is learning about our planet and spreading the word in her own unique way. She is assigned a project at school titled The Environment, forcing her to take a good hard look at the world around her. When her brother Kurt stages a camp-out to save an old tree, Clarice and her other brother Minal pitch in by creating protest signs. And that's how Clarice becomes an ecowarrior, saving the planet in her own backyard. That's the plot in a nutshell, although there are always delightful bits tucked here and there in the Bean books, so there's many more fun details on every single page.

Lauren Child just comes up the funniest bits, so wonderfully random. I like that she makes Clarice Bean weird and quirky. She irritates her teacher by falling off her chair on purpose and dodges the strange neighbor boy (wouldn't we all?) Robert Granger. Her grandad butters his tie into his sandwich and has a friend named Bert the Shirt. Random!

Not only is this a typical super fun Clarice Bean read, but it also helps kids understand the importance of helping our environment. If we teach them while they are young and impressionable, caring about our planet will be second nature to them. It is fitting that Lauren Child has always promoted recycling with her habit of using bits of magazine clippings, wrapping paper and scraps of fabric as art in her books.

Clarice Bean is Back and Better than Ever.....

Poor Clarice Bean, just a bit late to school, and now her teacher, Mrs Wilberton, has paired her with that awful Robert Granger for a project on the environment. Boring Robert wants to see who can walk faster, a snail or a worm. Could things get any worse? Obviously, yes they can, as her teenage brother Kurt informs the family. The city's going to cut down a tree right on their street. An old hundred year old tree. Kurt is upset and too depressed to even eat, and decides to camp out under the tree to save it. Pretty soon, the whole extended family gets involved, making signs that say "Free The Tree", and spaghetti marinara dinner to eat while sitting in the tree, and becoming ecowarriors. When the local newpaper sends a photographer to take a picture of this ragtag protest, Clarice and Robert (of course Robert Granger got himself in the picture) find they have an even better environmental project in the works..... Nobody captures the irrepressible and feisty grade schooler like Lauren Child, and Clarice Bean's latest eco-adventure is sure to have readers laughing out loud. Her fast-paced, text is entertaining and engaging, true to life, and full of witty asides and observations. But it's Ms Child's marvelously creative and innovative illustrations that make this book stand out. Her busy and clever collage artwork, mixing colorful pen and ink drawings and photographs, with imaginative fonts of all shapes and sizes, traveling up, down, and all around, will have youngsters entranced and poring over the pages, finding something new and interesting every time they open the book. Perfect for readers 7-10, or younger for reading aloud, What Planet Are You From, Clarice Bean? is a charming and hilarious, manic romp you don't want to miss and the third installment of a terrific and delightful series.

Not a full length story but still terrific!

For some reason, I expected this to be a full length book like Spells Trouble or Don't Look Now, but this is a picture book. However, a true Clarice fan will still love it. My 11 year old has read it twice because it shares the same wit as the longer Clarice Bean stories. The illustrations are wonderful and show some of the characters that don't appear in the other books, which my daugher was thrilled about. Bottom line, she loved it! I have to say if I had known that it was a picture book, I probably would not have ordered it. But I am so glad I did.

Anchoring Three words - You Will Roll! You’ve come all this way and almost every anchorage, save a precious few, will roll you, at times gently, at times almost violently, you will have to get used to it. You will learn to utilize a bridle or stern anchor, or you will lose sleep and curse every swell that works its way into your anchorage. At the very least it will make you appreciate the really calm anchorages such as Marigot Bay in St. Lucia, the Tobago Cays, or Hog Island in Grenada. At times it will seem like being underway is much calmer and the motion easier! If this is your first visit to the Caribbean, and say perhaps that you are used to anchoring in areas such as the Bahamas where 15'–20' of water is considered a deep anchorage, well, I have news for you. In the Caribbean, 15'–20' is considered a shallow anchorage, 30'–40'and more being the norm in a lot of places. Quite often you will find yourself anchored next to any one of the numerous charter boats you’ll see in almost every anchorage. You’ll learn to keep an eye on the charterers as they anchor nearby with too little or too much scope at times. This is not an indictment of all charterers, only the few that give all a bad name. Don’t let me scare you off, the Caribbean is well worth a bit of roll, and you will get used to it, tis a small price to pay for paradise! Caribbean Etiquette Proper etiquette is important when visiting foreign lands; lack of it can be embarrassing at the least and can create serious misunderstandings. For instance, when greeting people as you board a bus, give a hearty "Good morning" (if indeed it is morning) all around and it will be returned. The rule is greetings first, business later. Not offering a greeting first may be received as rude. If you approach a home that has a fence, stop at the front gate and say loudly "Inside". If you receive no answer, try again. If there is still no answer, the folks are either not at home or don’t wish to be disturbed. And by the way, when two people are speaking, as with good manners everywhere, it is extremely rude to interrupt. West Indians don’t do it, neither should you. Many Americans judge a man by the grip of his handshake, this does not work in the Caribbean where a soft, gentle hand "embrace" is more the norm. I’ve heard some folks (Canadians and Americans, never the British) say that they are surprised that West Indians do not smile. This can create the misconception that the person does not like the cruiser. This is, to say the least, ridiculous. West Indian manners call for a reserved face to be shown, saving the smile for something funny or someone they are familiar with. The lack of a smiley-face should not imply a negative attitude to the visitor unaccustomed to the lifestyle here in the Caribbean. Finally, let’s discuss a very important subject, it will be a part of a lot that you do here in the Caribbean. Let’s take a moment and touch briefly upon the Caribbean pastime of liming. If you’re invited to join a group for a drink or a bite to eat, by all means, do! Hang out! You’ll be liming! People in the Caribbean can be found liming everywhere, in the streets, in restaurants and bars, at home, or even on your boat. Liming is just chilling, hanging out … get the picture? I cannot end this section on etiquette without mentioning dress. What we cruisers take for granted in the way we dress while aboard is quite different from what is expected of us in public in the Caribbean. In town, a bathing suit is not acceptable and men should wear shirts as well as shoes. We should all dress as we would in going to our local mall when we go into any town in the Caribbean. Shorts and shirts are fine, bathing gear is not and is considered inappropriate. On some of the islands, particularly the French islands, it is not unusual for women to go topless on the beaches and even aboard their own boats, and yes gentlemen, it is rude to stare!

Very thorough cruising information on the islands except it didn't say that it was published in 2005. Much of the information on the anchorages, warnings, etc. could be useless as they are 9 years old.

I bought this book along with the Chris Doyle book. unfortunately THIS book is NOT IN COLOR. :( but if you cant buy the Chris Doyle book this has many b/w images to give you advice on harbor hopping the windward islands. I always like as much info as i can bring when your in the middle of nowhere. ie. the islands.

Finding the true road to success usually comes with a few bumps along the road. Those can include having to deal with a period of not having a permanent home and trying to find places to stay on a nightly basis. Or having your family kick you out of the home and forcing you to rely on yourself. But sometimes, rewards await those who persevere, and Jimmy Butler is a perfect example of that.

The thing about Jimmy Butler is that he has started to become one of the many stars of the National Basketball Association. His debut didn’t carry the same weight as some of his peers who came straight out of high school, or after just one season in college basketball. In fact, Butler played his freshman year at a junior college and then three years at Marquette University, where he finished his studies in communication studies.

He rarely played at first, at least before others above him were injured. Then he became accustomed to the difficulty of playing in the NBA, and now he averages more than 20 points per game with playoff contenders, the Chicago Bulls. He hasn’t won any championships, Most Valuable Player nominations, or any scoring titles like other superstar players who became synonymous with the franchise – like a certain “Airness” out of North Carolina.

And yet he continues to get better. Consider it the fruits of labor of someone who didn’t want to fail. Maybe those fruits were planted by seeds from someone who wanted to not let his rough childhood define who he was; a young teenager who became homeless because his mom couldn’t stand to look at him. Fans know him as the member of the Chicago Bulls who is more than willing to play every second of the game – including overtime – just to help the team get another win, no matter if they are playing in the season-opener against the worst team in the league, or in a game against the defending NBA champions.

not for spring guns

The book was very informative, though not as well written as his first book. The reviews i read failed to mention what kind of air gun the book was about. it is centered around the use of pcp rifels which are fine except they arnt my thing. im more interested in spring gun hunting and shooting. So it wasnt really the book for me. However his other book is on Rabitting and pest control. it is written much better. By that i mean less typos and less repeated sentences. It also focuses on Spring guns which is what im into so for me it was a much better book.

A Sniper Manual for Airguns

This is a military style manual on the discipline of long-range hunting with airguns. It is a British book, so some information given is of less importance to Americans, but overall the information is good and useful. There are only six chapters that cover air rifles, scopes, chronographs and pellets, night vision equipment, fitness and camouflage, and marksmanship. This is for a serious airgun hunter that is willing to spend the money on high dollar equipment and stretch the reach of their pellets.

Good information, but not exactly what I was looking for.

this is a good book with a lot of information about equipment, but only the equipment the author personally uses. I purchased the book because I own the rifle pictured on the cover,( Daystate Huntsman). There was hardly any reference to Daystate in the text. Most of the technical information is about Theoben rifles, which was a bit of a disappointment for me. If you have a Theoben, you will probably love it. I was also looking for more information about shot placement and pellet types. It was interesting reading, but not what I expected it to be.
