Short and Concise: Definitely worth the $5

I think one of my favorite parts about the book is the free audio book addition.

Lately I've been doing a lot of driving so it is nice to listen to these self help how to guides while I drive.
Definitely makes me feel like I am taking advantage of my time, so props to the author on supplying the audio book for free.

On to the actual book:

It is a brief 70 pages or so. Which is typically a good sign to me.
Anytime I download a self help book, I am looking for clear concise content.
Any self help book that is several hundreds of pages long, is typically filled with fluff and non useful information.

The book is broken into the following 6 steps

Step 1: Getting in the money making mindset

This section features some content that I've seen in other books before, but the purpose of providing this content has a a definite purpose and enriches the rest of the book.

Step 2: Understanding College Financial Aid 101

This section is HUGE for High School Seniors about to go into College, Parents sending a child to college for the first time, or anyone who has not waded through the financial aid process themselves. The content in this section is available elsewhere online, but not all in one place, and not in such a clear and concise format.

Step 3: The Hunt is On: Finding Scholarships That Have Little Competition Yet Can Fund Your Free Ride

In this section we encounter brand new content straight from the source. The $5 value is covered in this section tenfold.

Step 4: Heat Up Your Application - Successful Strategies on Becoming a Competitive Candidate

At first glance this seemed a bit of common sense to me. As I was reading I caught myself. I definitely did not think about these strategies when I was still in college, and I know I definitely would not have thought of them while still in High School. It was at this point in the book that I found myself aligning with a lot of the other reviewers in feeling the "I wish I'd known this way back when" feeling. Nostalgia hit me hard, and I can really see how this book could benefit students.

Step 5: Crushing Scholarship Applications one at a time Choosing Your Process

To a High School or College student, procrastination runs rampant. One of the only ways to get teenagers to work through applications like this is to give them very concise instructions. This section accomplishes that, I believe.

Step 6: You've Won The Money: Closing the Deal So More Money Comes Your Way

This section touches on two very key lessons in life: showing gratitude, and paying taxes.
There is still nothing that beats a quality Thank You letter, so I was pleased to see this taught as common practice.
The taxes section would also be quite useful to students, as taxes are not something many are accustomed to thinking about at their current stage of life.

In closing: This is a short, informative, and pleasant read that would have greatly benefited me were I still in college. I look forward to seeing some success stories this book will undoubtedly create. WARNING This book has too many reviews on the same day: September 19, 2014 and many reviewers only reviewed this book, And the ones that have more book reviews, they coincidentally have reviewed other 2 or 3 books that are the same. There are services that if you pay, the will fill your book with positive reviews.
I got the book and it is OK. for $5 It is good advice if you are just starting your money for college search.

This girl knows what she is talking about! The book does such an effective job of breaking down and simplifying an otherwise confusing and intimidating process. I wish I had this information in high school, but it's not too late to pass it on.

In his discussion of Le Corbusier, Mr. Giedion provides detailed analyses of the Carpenter Center at Harvard University, Le Corbusier's only building in the United States, and his Priory of La Tourette near Lyons. There is a section on his relations with his clients and an assessment of his influence on contemporary architecture, including a description of the Le Corbusier Center in Zurich (designed just before his death], which houses his works of art. The chapters on Mies van der Rohe and Alvar Aalto have been brought up to date with examples of their buildings in the sixties. There is an entirely new chapter on the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, whose work, as exemplified in his design for the Sydney Opera House, Mr. Giedion considers representative of post-World War II architectural concepts.

A new essay, "Changing Notions of the City," traces the evolution of the structure of the city throughout history and examines current attempts to deal with urban growth, as shown in the work of such architects as Jos� Luis Sert, Kenzo Tange, and Fumihiko Maki. Mr. Sert's Peabody Terrace is discussed as an example of the interlocking of the collective and individual spheres. Finally, the conclusion has been enlarged to include a survey of the limits of the organic in architecture.

About the Author
Sigfried Giedion was the first secretary-general of the International Congress of Modern Architecture. He taught at the University of Zurich, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University, where he became chairman of the Graduate School of Design.

A history of linear progression

This book is based on lectures Giedion gave at Harvard 1938-39. It is considered a modernist manifesto and after WW II, and well into the 1960s, it was often used in the training of architects all over the western world. European readers found the book interesting primarily because of it's section on the American history of architecture. The subtitle - The growth of a new tradition - refers to Giedion's conviction that the modern movement was the logical outcome of what he saw as a linear historical development. To make his case he gives his version of the history of architecture, and a big portion deals with the industrial era and how new technologies changed architecture and society as a whole. Giedion's all-inclusive way of reasoning was inspired by his teacher Heinrich W�lfflin. He also admired W�lfflin's mentor Jakob Burchardt. Giedion's mission is clear and he states that laissez faire mentality hinders development and that with common goals and values the world would be able to make changes for the better on a grand scale. Today the book in my view is primarily interesting as a time document and it gives insight into the modernist world of universal ideals.

A dated manifesto whose time has passed

This book is vast in its ambitions, uneven in its analysis, and badly dated in its defense of modern architecture. Giedion's basic premise is that the Industrial Revolution caused a separation to occur between thinking and feeling, this separation was exemplified by what he considers derivative architecture during the 19th century, and that it is up to the modern movement to reunite these two spheres by combining emotions with a scientific approach to architecture, and by adding the dimension of time to its three dimensional depiction of space. His historical analysis is quite erudite, but his treatment of the major architects who founded the modern movement, particularly Gropius and Le Corbusier, verges on hagiography. For instance he considers Gropius' PanAm building in New York, and Le Corbusier's Carpenter Center at Harvard to be great works of architecture, when contemporary critics view these as among their worst. The only American architect given comparable attention is Frank Lloyd Wright. The book flounders at the end in its speculation about the future, praising Le Corbusier's advocacy of separating people from cars by building elevated highways, and housing people in slablike high rise towers. Considering that Pruitt-Igoe was already, at the time of his final revision to his book, failing in St. Louis as an approach to house poor families (it was later blown to smithereens as a total disaster), this advocacy of housing people in high rises rings hollow indeed. He also advocates separating functions in a city, at a time again during his final revision, when Jane Jacobs "Death and Life of Great American Cities" was revolutionizing city planning by advocating just the opposite. It is worth reading because it makes you think, but it is badly dated.

Excellent history

I enjoyed this book for the author's insights into how 20th century architecture, starting from certain antecedents in the 19th century, such as the early iron-reinforced concrete structures of William LeBaron Jenny, progressed through Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, the Bauhaus school, and so on, up to the style which he calls "the hanging curtain of glass."
Giedion shows how this spectacular 20th-century building originated around the turn of the last century and how it's modern variations represent a triumpth of this type of design.
The basic principle, as exemplified early on in the Carson, Pirie, Scott, and Co. building in Chicago, is that as stuctural members receeded from the outlying masonry walls into the interior skeleton of the building, this allows the architect to open up the facade with windows, skylights, and other penetrating elements in order to let the maximum amount of air and light into the building. Eventually no real supporting structural members need reside on the outside of the building, and the aesthetic result is the "hanging curtain of glass" effect... Whatever one thinks of this type of building, it has become a major landmark of 20th-century architectural design in cities all over the world.
Giedion's treatment of Robert Maillart's graceful, parabolic spanning bridge designs in the Swiss Alps and some other places, such as the Tavanasa Bridge in the U.S., which he specifically discusses as one of Maillart's most important achievements, is also very interesting.
Overall, Giedion's book is a fine treatment of an important and difficult period in the history of architecture, and is one of the most important books on architecture to be written in recent decades.

For Dummies books are usually the best place to start for anything, beginning with nothing and building from the ground up, and this book lives up to that reputation. Following this book, which teaches you the basics, you might want to grab GameMaker Language An In-Depth Guide to follow up and take your GM knowledge and skills to the next level. These two books go very well together for anyone wanting to make the most of GameMaker.

A Central Text to Any Research on the A-Theory

All I can really say is this: William Lane Craig has produced a fantastic volume which includes deep insight into the topic at hand. There is another volume in the series, namely, "The Tenseless Theory of Time." This one in particular however, was vital to my research and was certainly referenced the most in my work. Craig offers interesting solutions to classical problems for the A-Theory, which includes questions like: "How long is the present?" and "What is the rate at which time flows?" Craig takes a strong presentist stance in particular and accepts a mind expanding view that the present qua the present is a non-metrical entity that is the temporal mode of being itself. I highly recommend this book and hope that other academics out there benefit from it as much as I did. It is worth the money if you consider yourself to be a serious student of the philosophy of time.

Defending A-Theoretical Presentism

Highly recommended for those interested in jumping headfirst into the discussion surrounding the philosophy of time. In this volume, Craig tackles most of the semantical issues in tense: what is tense? can tense be reduced or translated tenselessly without loss of meaning? As an A-theoretical presentist, Craig defends ontological tense. In defense, he rebuts the semantical reduction of tense by Old B-theorist's and the token-reflexive truth conditions of tensed sentences offered by New B-theorist's. More positively, tense is a phenomenologically obvious aspect of the human psyche: personal experience is itself an argument for the objectivity of temporal becoming.

Craig believes his presentist ontology escapes McTaggart's Paradox due to his sole ontological affirmation of a referentially non-degenerative, infinitely divisible and temporally analyzable interval of time. Because neither past nor future exist, the entanglements of McTaggart's Paradox are avoided.

This work of Craig's is well-organized: sectioned neatly and developing in a systematically coherent fashion. It is densely informative reading--certainly no text for the faint-of-mind--, but, with some cognitive application, anyone truly interested can enter this text with a limited grasp on the subject and maintain pace with the author.

Along with her companion volume The Tenseless Theory of Time: A Critical Examination, Craig deserves 5 stars for breadth, ease, and research depth.

My mother had this book when she was little.

Let me start out by saying that my mother had this book when she was little. She loved this book and still remembers many of these little verses. Such as: "You love yourself, You think you're grand, You go to the movies and hold your hand, You put your arm around your waist, And when you get fresh, You slap your face!"
"Grandma has a habit, Of chewing in her sleep, She chews on Grandpa's whiskers, And thinks it's shredded wheat."

For some reason I picked this book out to buy from the scholastic book sale back in the mid-1960's when I was in the 3rd or fourth grade in Sacramento, CA. I never got it or lost it soon after I got it, I know that something happened. Kids! I was able to read a lot of it and that tells me the kind of person I was even back then. The only other book I remember reading in elementary school, was baseball pals. I checked it out at least 5 times and it was overdue all the time! I always liked witticism and rhymes and the way words could do things that elicited feelings and emotions. I love words to this day and have written and published poetry. Kind of says that we do not change that much in our lives even after almost 50 years!
